Applecare - is it worth it ?

Hi

Presently just a thought, but really fancy an iMac.

Was just wondering from all those experienced apple users, is the AppleCare a worthwhile purchase ???

I've seen John Lewis are offering a 2 year warranty, which I presume it's theirs rather than apples ?

Any advice greatly

I don't generally buy warranties. Apple care is one I would get. Was about £130 on an imac. Similar from Dell for a pc was £260!! SOGA does generally protect you but it is more hassle if something breaks within the first 3 years as with AC you don't have to fight your corner anywhere near as much.

The JL one will probably hardware only. Can't imagine it will be the full software support too.

Also if you need to sell, remaining apple care is a big selling point. I wouldn't touch a second hand mac under 3 years old that didn't have apple care on it.
 
Its one of those things that you are damned if you do and damned of you don't. Chances are if you get it you will never use it like I did with my laptop, but it is nice to have.

£260? What was that on? A xps 15 laptop currently has the following options:

1Yr Next Day Hardware Support [Included in Price]
1 Year Next Day In-Home Service with Premium Phone Support [add £35.00 or £2/month1]
3 Years Next Day In-Home Service with Premium Phone Support [add £200.00 £127.40 or £7/month1]
 
Try eBay for the AppleCare , much cheaper than buying from apple

The latter on a dell mid range desktop. No idea why it was so stupidly expensive.

Certainly an area I hadn't thought of.

The John Lewis is hardware only, still 90 days for software - might try to find out who this is with - is it apple or JL themselves and if JL what do they offer - I've had excellent service from JL in the past, so have no problems buying from them.

The obvious question - I presume there is no difference and no problems to register the care with apple, if not bought from them ?

I would highly recommend AppleCare on all the major items of Apple kit. All the more so if this will be your first Apple computer as it provides far more than just hardware warranty.

I've bought and used AppleCare from an eBay supplier in the past but I seem to recall that AppleCare is no longer available via this route.
 
I recommend it, just paid for itself when my disc drive went at 15 months. I bought mine off Amazon for £70.

I understand the there to make money argument, they are, but Applecare service is some of the best I have dealt with. Very smooth and easy if you need to get some work done.

I would say for the £70 or whatever you can get it for that yes it is worth it, but not from Apple. On ebay (as always) use a reputable seller that has very very good feedback.

They used to just email you the code but I believe you need the retail box now due to a change in policy but mine went through OK with just the code

it's worth looking at CEX as well because they sometimes have them in
 
It's just one of those things where buying will make sure that it doesn't break, it's sods law.

Working on that basis I did buy AppleCare for my iMac.

However, I didn't bother on my old MacBook and I took it into the apple store a few weeks back to get the top case fixed and they fixed it FOC even though i bought it '07, so they may still cover stuff without Apple Care.
 
I have had a few dealings with Apple for devices still under warranty - they couldn't have been more helpful.

AppleCare is certainly worth the small price given the service you are going to experience should you have a problem.

I have had to use mine twice & Magic mouse replaced & swapped out the DVD & back in a day. I took one out on my sons MacBook as a student (cost £40) he has used it a couple of times not sure it was Apple fault though or him getting newer hardware typical student
