Who's watching?

Any Mac from 2007 onwards will receive OSX Mavericks for free!!!

Apparently from tomorrow!

I'm following it on Engadget. Nice that they are actually giving away a new OS!

At the Apple event today, they announced that OS10.9 Mavericks would be available for FREE.

Nice one Apple.

Now wait for the log jam on the internet as everyone and his/her dog tries to download it.

Brilliant, been waiting a few months for new Macbooks so happy that new ones are launched.

I'm quite shocked, they've soo far shown more than people anticipated, I thought there would be a new iPad update but we're not even that far in yet, Mac pro, new MBP line up, new Aperture, new iWork for cloud etc!

Ipad Air announced shipping Nov 1st

Currently downloading Mavericks!

From the UK you have to change the app store to US to grant the download, unless you want to wait until tomorrow but there will be some severe bandwidth lag this week because of Apple's servers having high demand!

Just paid to update to mountain lion today. Arse! On the upside I don't think its broken anything. Which is nice.

D'oh, it's cancelled the download as my account is for the UK only!

Will try when it's available tomorrow!

OK, Mavericks is back and available on the UK store! 5.29GB download, will take me 2 hours as I'm on rural broadband!!! :(

Downloaded & installed, trouble free process :)

I'll wait until I find out how stable it is, too many things going on this month to risk osx being as unstable as ios7 on my 5s

Keep us posted with experiences etc, I'm away from home till Friday so can't update until then.

I would assume software won't be affected too much. Will be annoyed if it will affect anything, I literally did an SSD upgrade this morning and finished installing all the software by 5pm!

I'm wondering how compatible it is with mountain lion drivers. Got an ancient Wacom graphire which is fine under mountain lion but there's no way back if it doesn't work with mavericks . . .

Managed to upgrade with no fuss, but mine was an almost fresh installation so little risk of data loss. Everything seems intact!

I haven't messed with keychain yet, as I use something else for looking after my passwords.

1 hour in and only 1.5Gb to go

Well, Aperture 3 and iPhoto are 'not supported on this type of mac'
Not sure what's happened there, the iMac's not even a year old :D

The cheeky sods,

Just checked on the Apple store, new iPhoto and Aperture are the only compatible versions with Mavericks so I've now made two apps useless!

I am pretty happy with the free download. I just need install it now. I see they try to move everyone to the latest and greatest to save the cost of supporting old software.

Otherwise I can't stop wondering what new is there? Not much... nothing revolutionary at all. They still sell MBPs with 4GB RAM and I dread to see rMBP at the same level. Weird. High end ones seem to be more expensive now, which is bad news.
New ipads are fair enough, but what will they do different to 3 and 4. Better games? I don't care. I am not upgrading, more likely moving to the next Nexus 10. Ipad 2 is still here. Really weird... At least that will keep v3 prices higher.

New iphoto apparently uses apple maps for locations. For that reason alone I don't think I'd bother updating!

This Mavericks thing seems like a bit of a waste of time...a few new icons, colours and a different default wallpaper? At least iOS7 added some new functionality; tags might come in handy and better battery life is great (if it works).
Im struggling at the minute with Apple, dont seem to making many waves (pardon the pun); I thought the changes wouldve been bigger and better given theyve gone with new names.

I thought aperture 3.5 and iPhoto were both available now to update ?

I think it looks great, the memory 'share' thing looks good as too does battery life. Plus, it's FREE!!

The iPad is smaller faster and lighter, the pro range got the update it needed. Not really sure what people seriously expect, what waves were you expecting or wanting?

Without wanting to turn it into a mac v PC argument, was windows 8 a wave maker?

you have to admit at least MS have tried a new design, yeah okay people have thrown their toys out the pram over it but at least theyre trying something new. plus 8.1 is a free OS update too.

i get what thrash is saying, its hardly a revolutionary update. id be very interesting to see what happens when they do something different. didnt they say after all that this layout only had a limited lifespan left?

ha, already had to issue an advisory to our users not to update their work machines after several tried (fortunately access restricted in the office, and most are not admin).

This is quite handy. There's been a couple of apps I've wanted to download but they haven't been compatible as I'm still on Snow Leopard.

You have to be careful though as I think SL is the last one with the rosetta stuff for older apps. Java also gets disappeared and became problematic in Lion so I'd assume mavericks was even worse.

Kind of interesting that the new Mac Pro has been given a shipping date and price

Well I bought my Mac in 2009 and, as far as I'm aware, i don't think I have any of the apps that would be affected. What are the issues with java?

java is not installed by default but gets downloaded for ML when you need it. i would assume Mav would do the same?

i.e. first launch of CS4 goes off and downloads java from apple.

not had any bother with it either. Lion was a bit of an arse of an OS though, we canned it for ML pretty sharpish.

It's just a pain to add on with all the security issues. I only really use it for cyberduck so I gave up using cyberduck. The available security options didn't allow just having java for a small list of specified apps. It was all or nothing.

Updating to ML seems to have removed the java runtime that I had previously with Lion.
