Hi guys,

Just wondering if anyone has ever compared the two? - I' ve been using the Lightroom evaluation and there are some things which bug me (mainly navigation).

So, anyone used Aperture? - Is it as good/better than Lightroom?

Dave

I use aperture and I'm very happy with it. I've not used lightroom. Some comment that have come up against aperture is that it has it's own filing system which only works with aperture (unless you use referenced files). Where lightroom still maintains your filing system, or at least so I understand.

Ah, that's somewhat annoying. From what i've read, aperture 1.5 should support my needs with the referenced files like you said.

The other concern is that it's OSX only, and I'm not all that keen on vendor lock in. Ohh well, may as well download the Aperture evaluation :)

Sorry if I sound stupid here, but what do you mean by 'referenced' files?

I've yet to use either Aperture or Lightroom, have only used Photoshop, but do actually have Aperture and haven't got round to using it yet.

I used to use iPhoto, mainly for viewing images, but don't like the way you have to import images in, rather than view them from existing files. Is Aperture the same in this respect?

Referenced files doesn't copy or move the files anywhere, it just tells aperture to use the files in their current location.

The other alternative is to let aperture move and store all your photos itself.

The advantage to referencing files is that you can choose how they're stored, and where.

Thanks Dave, I'd definitely go for the referenced files option then. I might actually have a go at using it soon. :)

I'm not sure if it's still the case but the early version of Aperture would only let you store images on the computers hard drive. You couldn't use external hard drives.

As a lightroom user all I can say is that Lightroom does everything I need it to do.

Don't forget there are some great Lightroom tutorials around.

Small tip, when you first start, only make a small catalog at first. You may find you need to change things around and it can be a real pain to have to start all over again from scratch if you have loads of images to move around.

the only problem with referenced files is that when you back up your catalogue to a vault, it doesn't back up the referenced files. your responsible for that.
I'm not sure, but I think if your did lose your catalogue, it would still retain old referenced information in the vault.

I find Aperture much faster to work with, but that's a personal thing and you may find you like Lightroom better. The only problem at the minute is that Aperture doesn't support the new Nikon bodies yet so I'm stuck using NX right now.

Since v1.2 the ability to export selected photos as a new catalogue means it's a lot easier to shuffle things around. I turned a single large catalogue (50,000+ files) into 5 smaller ones in just a few mins when 1.2 was released
