Hi

I am relatively new to Aperture and processing raw files and wondered if anyone could give me some help with what they do when processing.

Some items that I am unsure about:

Is there always an original copy held on my computer, if so where can I find it?
How do I know if any adjustments are decreasing the quality of the file?
How do I go about converting it to a JPEG?

I will probably have more questions as I progress through my first go at processing

Aperture always keeps the original file called a master file. You should be able to locate the master file from the menu bar options...(not sure the exact menu option). You can also write/save the changes to the master file to overwrite original.

How do I know if any adjustments are decreasing the quality of the file?

Odd question, I assume you mean quality of the picture not file? most settings can make a good photo look bad and vice-versa...but all depends on how you want the photo look like...

How do I go about converting it to a JPEG?

You can right click a photo and select export, this will bring an option page up to select different export presets...you can add your own or use one of the supplied presets. I would select a preset that you planning to use the photo for...I.e. don't export a full size for a web site upload (unless for print)..as this could be around 10mb or more.

hope that helps....

Dan.

Thanks for this, it gets me started, I did mean picture, what I was trying to work out is what can I adjust in the raw format without affecting quality, as I believed that shooting in raw gave you this option

When working with a RAW photo you have to remember the shot will look a bit flat and you need to make your own changes now to make the photo have a little more punch or creative feel to it...

Quality wise you can over or under expose a photo, over sharpen and many other setting which can make the quality of the photo look bad. Best thing is when looking at the shot try and vision how you wanted the photo to look at the time of the shot..all depends how creative you want to take the shot.

Why not post a photo up with your changes and ask for other to see what they think and let them have a crack at some PP.

Yes Aperture keeps all originals to find it just right click on the image and the second item down is "Show in Finder" You can also always refer back to your original by pressing 'M' when in Split View or Viewer

As Dan says in the Right Click menu you can Export the Version Or Master, and pick from the preset list the size and format you want, or you can define your own preset and add that to the list.

There should be an Export icon on the toolbar too, which does the same thing.

Cheers guys, I am gonna have a go and see what I can do! Just got to work out what I need to do now!

Here is the photo that I have been playing with, but not sure what to do with it and need some pointers/help.

As said above I have not used aperture at all really to adjust photos before so any help is much appreciated.

All I have done here is cropped it and white balanced it
