Hi

I have a wedding to do for a friend/client on June 17th, i am not charging the full amount, only covering costs, the wedding is in Southend Essex,

I started getting into weddings by being a 2nd shooter and have progressed into doing my own weddings now,

What i am offering is the opportunity (like i had) to be a second shooter with me, you will use my equipment (canon), we will need to meet up prevoiusly to discuss requirements.

I will not be able to pay for this but you would recive (once the bride has seen photos) a fair amount of photos on disc for you own use, you should be based reasonably local

I would like people to know that this will only be my 4th wedding on my own and i am still learning, i am laid back and will help people where i can...

It a good change for some experience

if any one is intrested let me know

Jamie

I don't want to rain on anyones parade here, but if this is only your 4th wedding, is it wise to offer the 2nd shooter opportunity to someone who will probably also require significant support from you and distract you from concentrating on your own things?

Just seems a bit dangerous to me, sorry if this doesn't help

As it states 4th wedding, but have had lots of 2nd shooters work, my 1st wedding was done with the help of a second shooter from this forum,

i dont see it as a problem (you obiously do), my main point was " i havnt been doing it for years and years, but am confident in my abilities" and didnt want to put someone off who wants a chance by them thinking that i was an old pro (lol) who would be hard to get on with, as i felt when i 1st started out (BEFORE ANY COMMENTS THATS HOW I FELT NO A OPENING FOR A BARREL OF ABUSE)

Every one has there own opinon......

Shame - I was just reaching for a crowbar for my barrel ;)

If you're confident enough with it, it seems like a fair offer to me, hope you find someone you get on with and who appreciates their main instruction for the day is to not get in your way

Cheers DAVE

A nice comment for once LOL

Just want to help someone like i got help from a very good Pro.

IT can be hard doing weddings....But enjoyable....

As long as i find the right person then im sure it will be good

Hi i think its a great offer and would jump at the chance but 200 miles is a little too far to travel, hope you get some-one to take up the offer and good luck :)

:( I would have bene interested if it hadn't been a weekday, I've not got much annual leave left for the rest of the year.

If you get one on a weekend, I'd be interested :D

I took it to mean lenses rather than all kit so it would suit a Canon user so you had different lenses. I could have interpreted that wrong though

Maybe that's the idea Fabs ;)

Seriously though maybe he's just being sensible. If he is to work in the capacity of advisor to the assistant he will be more effective if he knows the equipment they are using so there's not faffing about trying to find the menu item in an unfamiliar camera.

Having said that it will limit the choice. Most people who are confident enough to do a second shooter job should know enough about their kit to operate it and get a result that's required.

It just says "equipment" Kel, so I took it to mean bodies and lenses, but I guess it would only really suit a Canon user either way.

I don't know, a Nikon/Sony/Olympus etc user might be able to still second shoot if they know their way around the camera and have the right equipment?

no I don't actually, I was just asking a question (plus getting my posting number up a bit!), but I do think 2nd shooter is a whole lot different from being principal photographer, so there's still a lot to learn.

but if you feel confident you can do the job justice and support a nervous first timer 2nd shooter, then go for it!

But that's my point. Will they know their way around a Canon camera? Not saying it's impossible, just that it could put some people off.

I like the sound of this and would like to give it a go, but am not sure I am ready at this moment in time....

Me too, sounds like a fantastic opportunity, but I really dont think my work would be up to scratch to be honest. Great offer though, very thoughtful.

One on my assistants got her first intro to a Canon 1D mkII at the marathon on Sunday. Ok she's not as quick at changing settings as I am, but she was comfortable with what to do within 10 minutes. As long as they know their way around a DSLR the change in which buttons to press shouldn't be too bad. After all I doubt they'll be changing things hidden away in the depths of the menu system

Fair comment. I've never used any other DSLRs so wasn't at all sure of what the differences are, if any.

They dont all recognise voice commands like Sony :)

Sorry, I meant if they have their own Nikon camera and equipment and know their way round it. Gosh you are hard work today Marc

Blimey, all these posts...wasnt expecting a debate (oh yes i was lol)

The reason to use my camera and lenses,,,,

1. its the way i like to work, have been taught to have 2 bodies and 2 x lenses, that way i can pass the camera between the 2 off us, getting to shots with different angles etc and i know the quality of my camera/lens

2 this way i get all the photos to show the bride (last wedding we took over 900 shots between us and over 300 was very good and shownt o B&G, cant show them all LOL, there was a lot of doubles and some insignificant ones taht wasnt used) too many to show brides and groom, then i can edit them and supply the 2nd shooter with shots for there potfolio

3. the B & G havnt paid for a second shooter and although they are friends (as such) they cannot then get confussed with where are the other photos you have taken (ie if the 2nd shoter walked around shooting people and they never saw them shots they may be dissapionted)...no1 priority is the CUSTOMER

and 4... thats why i want to meet before to go through things , settings, use of camera etc.

oh and 5...because thats they way i like to do things lol

YES it is different to being a 2nd shooter, but we all have to start somewhere, as GARY D did when he helped me with the wedding (snow everywhere and about 30 bridesmaids and ushers, wasnt easy, but met him first and when through the drill)

Dosnt have to be a 1st timer, i did about 6 weddings as a 2nd shooter before going out on my own, and will still help out my regualr principle togs as and when he needs me (for free), its all experience and i learn new thing and get different ideas every time i do

I WILL LET THIS RUN FOR A WHILE TO SEE WHO CONTACTS ME, THEN LOOK AT WHAT I THINK IS THE BEST PERSON TO SUIT ME (THAT DOSNT MEAN THE MOST EXPERIENCED), SO IF YOU HAVE PMed ME SO FAR I WILL CONTACT YOU SOON

Just one thing - unles I am mising something here. You said you work with two cameras so you can pass them back and forth - implying each camera will have a mix of your shots and those of your second shooter. How then will you know which pictures to give them for their on portfolio since the portfolio should only include shots they took?

Fair point...But I can remember what i have taken within reason, i would give 2nd shooter many images on disc but not all, there may be a few that they did not take but its more about the experience..

you know when you wish you hadnt started what you thought was a simple thread ..................................

:) sorry to put that spanner in the works. But if i was to second shoot I wouldn't want anyone elses pictures in my portfolio. Just my preference of course.

If you had your two cameras with two lenses you could use both and switch between them (you got two shoulders) . Leave the second shooter to use their own kit so you keep images seperate.

Then i could be back to the issue of " the bride asking where the other photos was that the 2nd shooter was takiing", this happened to my PRO TOG before we started working together....Just my preference

Are you saying you don't want to give the second shooter's images to the B&G at all - you're basically giving them the experience to get the pictures but for their own use only?
