I'm looking at the Canon EF 70-300mm with IS for the next purchase before my Safari. What's the general opinion of the lens? Is anyone using it and have any example images?

I've found it on Amazon for £408... the hood is £30, is it worth getting the genuine one, or should I get the cheapo one from hong kong for a fiver? What's the difference? (If I should get the lens at all that is...)

Thanks in advance!

I was looking at this lens and the 55-250 IS, which I eventually bought, and the general opinon (on here) was that the 70-300 IS was good for the price. Depends what you intend using it for. The 55-250IS is a cracker and I never regreted buying it, particularly because it was half the price of the 300!

Very good lens for the money, I recommend it. As for the hood, the HK ones do the job

I may be alone here Glenn but I find pixel peeping on a baboon's arse far from ideal when trying to assess the merits of a zoom lens :gag:

:lol: The 70-300IS lens is a great lens and if you fancy it, pixel peek the above picture

I had one, and it was awesome! It's been sold now to make was for a 70-200 f/2.8 and a 100-400 eventually. You won't get better optics without spending A LOT more cash!

Wicked, thanks for the feedback guys... but what's pixel peeking? Sounds like some kind of voyeurism!

Pixel peeping is zooming right in on the image, (so you can see the individual pixels, or at least get close). Some people think it's important to try and spot flaws at this level, others don't. But if an image looks sharp even when magnified a few times, it's sure to look sharp when zoomed out\!!

i'm just making the same decision. I am decided on the 55-250 for now, because you can always trade up later I reckon via the classifieds. Guess it really depends on your budget because the reviews are all pretty positive for both.(i.e good value for the cash, which really is all you can ask for isnt it?)

I have a 70-300mm IS and although I have now got the range covered by the Sigma 70-200mm f2.8 and the 120-400mm I will never sell the Canon. It so much smaller, lighter and easier to use for long periods. The IS works really well, a good three stops and the IQ is excellent. You wont regret buying it.

I meant lens and hood. Woops! Sorry. Should get the lens tomorrow and the hood on Friday. Going down to Hamerton Zoo on Saturday or Sunday to have a play.

You'll like that. As others have said you'll pay a hell of a lot more before you find something better and before that you'll find a pile of things that are far worse.

I still have mine with my 30D and my son uses it to great effect.

As with all the above, I have one and love it. I keep contemplating upgrading it to a 70-200L of some sort, but fear I'd miss the extra 100mm too much.
I got the cheapo lens hood for it from 7dayshop as I was too tight to shell out £30 for the canon one. It does the job fine.

If this is your first long lens, have a search on here for threads about using one as the contents of the view finder will move around quite a lot at 300mm with just the tiniest movement of the end of the lens. The IS works well to correct some of this, but it can't perform magic.

Received it today. Was working from home due to having my holiday jabs early this morning. Didn't get chance to play with it much, but it's definitely not an indoor lens.

Am very much looking forward to going to play with the animals this weekend. ;)
