Edit My Images
No
Hi, is anyone using the Apple Photos App as editing software? If no, why not and if yes how are you finding it?

I am not. Partly because the version supplied with my iMac was not as featured as the current version and partly because I had already learnt Photoshop Elements and did not want to relearn. A foolish thought as I have since learnt Lightroom.

John,if you update to high Sierra you will have the latest version.

I am but since updating to high Sierra the editing is dog slow and buggy causing my machine to lock up for about half a min or more.
ive sent a report to Apple telling them it is not acceptable,
I am now editing with affinity photo then taking my jpegs from there into apple photos to catalogue, for that I find it really good

I tried it briefly a couple of years ago, and the dire lack of functionality made it a waste of disc space. I understand it has been improved, but it cannot offer any advantage over my usual software (LR, PhotoRaw and DXO OP). Even free software like Fotor was significantly more powerful, and didn't try to hide my images.

I've played around with it before and found it to be far too basic for anything other than the most basic of adjustments. I guess it depends what you actually want it for. If you just want to touch up your holiday photos a little then it'll do. I'd definitely say it's not for professional use though.

....I agree and would add that neither is it satisfactory for serious amateur use.

As I only shoot RAW format, I used to use Apple's Aperture but moved to Capture One Pro when Apple announced they would not be developing it any further :(.

I don't even use the Apple Photos app for viewing images on any of my Mac machines. It seems to be only geared for the average consumer with a mobile device. I expect it does that very well but it's not for me.

Has anyone re-tried it recently though? it is now actually half decent and getting better. No LR replacement but certainly good enough for most if they don't want to do loads of high power editing.

....That's good news if it's getting better but it's Horses-for-Courses and it seems highly unlikely that it ever will compete with the established RAW editors. Otherwise, it doesn't make sense Apple giving up on Aperture (which upset a lot of serious photographers both amateur and professional).

yes its quite good for basic editing now,
unfortunately since Hi Sierra editing is a nightmare for many people it slows and locks and is really bad.
I dp use it for cataloguing and find it excellent for that, once you know your way around.
good for slideshows with music if thats your thing and making albums etc.
I have affinity photo now and find it ok as a raw editor but excellent as a pixel editor

,but Ive gone back to stand a lone Lightroom as I like how it handles raws

TBH I can't imagine why anyone serious about processing images would use it, unless they cannot afford or do not want to use one of the proper image processing packages.

I can't imagine anyone going back BUT I think it is now probably good enough for many hobbyists who don't want to pay for software to use and be happy with.

It is getting to the point where the answer to the question "what's the best free/cheap software for editing" is simply, "just use Photos" (assuming they have a Mac).

thats true but there are far more people less serious about editing I would guess

Even if one is not at all serious about image editing, a LR6 lifetime licence can be picked up for around £120, and quite frankly LR is so good that I doubt I will personally ever use anything else.

I loved apples aperture and I was sad to see them drop support for it. I have since gone the Lightroom CC and Photoshop CC route and to be honest it does all I will ever need. I looked at photos a few weeks back but its not a patch on the adobe pair. I do think that if someone is starting out then it will work for them and it is free with the OS
