Anyone used an EF 200 F2 with a 1.4 or 2x extender?

If so how did you find the speed of focusing and what camera were you using?

Any examples?

Just wondering how this would compare to a 300/2.8 (IS and Non IS).
 
Ive used the older 200mm f1.8 Rob with both extenders, probably the single best lens ever made from either camp, super fast, super sharp with or without extenders, the new f/2 is supposed to b e just as good.

Thanks Gary. On the Pixel Peeper website I couldn't find any with a focal length other than 200mm implying non with an extender.

When you used the f1.8 with the 1.4 extender how did you find the focus speed/image quality compared to a 300/2.8 IS?

Better, it was simply the fastest and best lens Canon ever produced, if you can find an old f/1.8 try it out, Aperture have a minter in stock so have a run out to them, theyre practically on your doorstep and will gladly let you hook your camera up to it and fire off some test shots.http://www.apertureuk.com/pictures_of_cameras/Canon-Lens/EF-200-1.8/EF-200-18.html

Al De Man on here has the 1.8 version and he has some images on his Flikr account...Maybe worth dropping him a PM...He also posts his Table Tennis stuff on here too...some with the 1.8.

Owned the 200mm 1.8 for about 6 months now.. used it with both 1.4 and 2 converters.. can't go wrong with it.
Works really well with both - and is damn sharp!
Can I post any examples - unfortunately nothing 'serious' as it's all DataCo, etc protected stuff.
But can recommend the 200mm f1.8 - and the one linked from Aperture looks to be in pretty good shape.
Test it - and you'll walk away with it :D

I also use the 200mm f1.8 and it is a superb lens in every respect - totally agree with everything that has been said.

My only negative comment has nothing to do with its optical performance but how much it weighs if you have to carry it for any length of time - it is a beast and a beauty of a lens.
 
Agree with all above, and I still have a 200mm 1.8. I used it all the time with a 1.4 and 2x extenders in my earlier days for football etc. Used to get some cracking images when coupled to my 1D mk1 and 10D.

Its been retired due to auto focus motor problems and lock ups. It sits in its box under the stairs awaiting repair as were told by Lehmans it was unrepairable as no spares are available, (unless anyone knows who can fix it out there).

I would love to use it again if just only for the indoor stuff. Would recommend, but the spares problems would be an issue, but not if you're looking at a 200mm F2.
 
The AF motor going is a common problem I've read, which is a problem with the older focus by wire. It's what put me off a 200mm f/1.8 and I went for a 300mm f/2.8 IS instead as the 200mm f/2 was still stupidly priced and hard to get plus I could get the 300 repaired easily.

Thanks for the info. Like you I also have the 300 2.8 IS, and an older 400 mk2 non IS which I believe is no longer supported for spares now.

Sorted.

Just managed to get a chap at work running in the car park. Looks like it's front focussing a few inches with and without the 2x extender on.

So I'll set MA as -3 and see what happens. Son no 2 got a school rugby match this afternoon at 3pm.
 
Well here are a few from today. I thought the focussing seemed really quick but most were very soft.

I do find them much better when the frame is mostly filled.
