Got my hands on some second hand low voltage downlights the little spot type things you see in snazzy kitchens. Has anyone used or tried using these for studio lighting? I was thinking of mounting them vertically on two moveable boards left and right of camera centre facing subject. Would the boards need to be painted white or black? Your thoughts or experiences please.:)
 
Thoughts? I'm not sure what the point is :thinking:
 
MASSIVE heat dissipation issues, not really designed to be run off flex so it'll have to be substatial cable, the light won't colour balance with ungelled flash
and you're massively not impressing me with electrical knowledge, this could go very wrong and end in burns/shocks so think before you leap

all costs in it won't likely be as cheap as you'd think and a 580ex with a rayflash will be dearer but a LOT more flexible and will be more professional looking and more usable

sorry if that sounds harsh but I just got up, I'd still say the same things later but I'd say them nicer

lol missed the LV part so yeah there'll be a big buzzing tranformer and they don't tend to be too bright
 
As others have indicated I'd give these a wide berth photographically, and if anything go and fit them in the kitchen tbh.

If you want decent lighting on a budget then just gather a few cheap and simple camera flashes (just manual/adjustable output no CLS/iTTL/eTTL) and some cheap radio triggers.
 
Thanks for all the replies, i already have the lights and the transformers which are smaller than a mobile phone btw, i am qualified as an electrician so no problems there. No cost involved, Its just a case of time and wether its gonna be worth it, i might give it a go, will let you know how it works out.
