I wondered if anyone here can recommend a nice place to stay in the lakes?

We have a 8 month old so perhaps needs to be child friendly and we're open to suggestions for either hotels or self catering.

As you can imagine I am also a keen photographer and we also like walking I would been keen to stay somewhere where I can practice my landscape skills ;)

Anyone ?

Last time I was there, stayed at Windermere. Was less crowded than Bowness-on-Windermere, and a short walk from the lake itself .. lots of great locations to shoot around there.

It really depends how much you want to spend.

I can recommend an incredible little hotel just outside Windermere where we have stayed twice for the wedding anniversary, and booked up for next year again. It's spotless, quaint, tasteful, and the best food I've ever eaten in a hotel (AA Rosette), and near on the best I've eaten in a restaurant full stop. It's not exactly cheap but is child friendly. From the location there is a short 10 min walk down to the lakeside (quiet jetty's) and you can get to many a beauty spot within about 30 mins drive from there.

Rooms start at around £150 incl dinner b&b (per room per night based on 2 adults sharing) for a standard, then you have Premier and Suites.

If you're looking for a less expensive option, then there are hundreds of B&B's which are comfortable but I'm sure others are better placed to advise on those.

If scenery is a priority then I think you are best staying in the North Lakes area..Ambleside/Langdales/Keswick - the Southern Lakes are much less dramatic.

Regarding accomodation it can be a little bit "hit & miss"..I've recently used Keswick Cottages and can recommend them, we'll be using them again next year... we stayed in Braithwaite, good pub with decent food and close to Keswick - on the main route for the buses too if you fancy a rest from the car !!

Ambleside lodge is good. Stopped there a lot of years ago but was impressed. Close to centre of village with good pubs and not too expensive.
