Yes
we moved house at the weekend and the old owners left behind an old barbeque. when we went to move it we looked under the lid and found this inside. i dont think anything is using it anymore but we're not sure and dont want to disturb it incase its still in use. Ive never seen anything like it before, its about the size of a tennis ball maybe slightly smaller and is hanging from the bars. anyone got an idea what it might be?

I would have thought that was a wasp's nest.

Mike.

yeah i second wasp nest. Its in the right place, a spot of lighter fluid....

Well I must say the striations in the colour look that way.........cant see any hexagons or cells inside though.

Good god, Matty..........you been away on holiday??

Is it a barbequed tennis ball:lol:

i would have thought a wasps nest was bigger than that, but tbh ive never seen a wasps nest before.

Wasps nests can be up to 30cm diameter ... ... depending on the type of wasp and size of colony ... ;) ... apparently ...

its a wasp or hornets nest,if its a wasps they start from an individual queen, the nests start as room for her then get up to the size large footballs, the biggest ive ever seen filled a black bin liner and filled my freezer.

Absolutley spot on!
The Queen builds a nest with about 6 egg cells roughly the size of a golf ball. She looks after the eggs / feeds tha lavea until there are enough to feed her then she starts to produce more eggs the worker then take on roles of feeding the lavea feeding the Queen and expanding the nest.
By late summer there are several thousand egg cells ( in layers) in a nest somewhere around the size of a football / beach ball size.
The bigest I have delt with has been about 1metre x 1 meter in the shape of a light bulb hanging from rafters.
The biggest Hornets nest, totally filled a roof space of a bungalow, that had to have been a few years old though and was a lot of fun

Edit this time of year its probabley one of the failiers I woudl expect it to be the size of a grape fruit or small melon by now

i remember when we had a wasps nest but i couldnt tell you its size as it was in a large stoned wall, bees are fun though, my mum used to keep them at the top of the garden, damn good honey though when she bothered to look after them are take the honey

Hi,

can be bigger than that, seen a couple that were 3 - 4ft wide. we had one in a old country house we lived in when I was a teenager, you could hear them through the walls and when my dad went into the attic via a door in the wall in the hall it was easily 3-4 ft wide and nearly as tall as it was just spread over an area between the joists, it wasn't round it just filled the space.

They post guards at the door of the nest and their sole purpose is to attack anyone/anything that comes close. We had to be wary of them as my brother was allergic to them and had to carry a hypo of stuff with him wherever he went in case he got stung. Only time I was ever stiung by one was when my dad cut through a nest with his powersaw whilst tree felling.

Hate wasps, although I know they are useful.

Mike.

You horrible bunch of sadists!!!
