You could try nail polish remover pads (or cellulose car paint thinner on a rag) but it will probably attack the varnish too. If the black has got into the wood grain then stripping the varnish, sanding the ink out and refinishing may be the only answer.... or buying a new table.

I'd go with the sanding and refinishing, and do the whole lot while you're at it. I'm always a bit anxious when it comes to using solvents and other liquids on finishes in case it blotches or bleaches.

sand it , varnish it , brand new again

Don't let people near it with a felt tip pen!!!

But yes, I'd sand it, then wax it instead rather than varnish, would look a lot nicer and doesn't chip or get too shabby!

sander ?

Some helpful solutions there chaps. I'll try hackers first and if thats no good I'll have a go at everyone elses suggestions.

khjs, Looks like you may have plenty of hairspray, can I have some of yours please !!!!

tablecloth in case it all goes horribly wrong

A while back, I got a Stanger Eraser Pen from Lidl. IIRC, it was packaged as a CD marker eraser but it seems to lift all "permanent" marker pen from most surfaces. Just tried it on a bit of varnished wood (I did it on a hidden bit, just in case!) and it lifted the ink straight off with no damage to the varnish.
