Honestly if your neighbour fitted new pads and crashed the car (same model as yours) in the evening would you bin the pads?

Why the hell do we buy used lenses and cameras? We seriously must be crazy.

Wait till something expensive happens. New gearbox, or engine. I'll see how you cough up £5000 or more to the dealer.

See my post in the VW thread, my current car a 7 year old Citroen C3 is worth about £1800?

If and I use the word IF I had an interest in buying an expensive car it would be covered by a warranty for piece of mind.

So long as the reflectors and seals are of the same quality it's a no brainer, but as you say, main components are a different consideration in terms of reliability as well as safety.

My previous car was 7 yrs old when I traded it in for the current car. A replacement engine from a breakers would have been around £1k and still no warranty other than maybe they will guarantee it will start, do you have the means and ability to rebuild it so you know it is in good working order?. I'm capable of rebuilding an engine, just don't have the time space to do it. A new engine will at least come with a warranty and I'd rather that than a reconditioned engine especially if you are unsure of the companies reputation as such as there are several cowboys out there just fitting an engine from a scrapped car, with no reconditioning and no idea of history.
 
The thing about cars and repairs/maintenance is its all about balancing risk in my mind.
A lot of people buy new keep it until the warranty runs out (3 years with most) and move it on this keeps them safe from unexpected.

then middle ground, they buy the 3 year old ones and either take the chance or like me pay for a decent third party warranty and then drive for 2/3 years and get the best value from a modern car (at least for me) the danger here is if you have bought a premium car then even 3/4 years old it could be worth 10k-15k so if something big goes wrong your are main dealer stuffed and can face big bills.

once you are through that 6 years type period then you can buy the car for say 3k and take your chances and if you have a big POP you might have to scrap it but what are the chances of that in modern cars realy?

I will take the Paula Radcliffe model anyday, great runner, not the best looker though.
