Yes
I've got a 300/2.8 II.

I'd like to try a 400/2.8 IS.

So wondering if anyone had a 400 we could swap for a weekend.

I do Rob. Didn't you say hi to me at Millwall game last season?

I will be there next Sat for the game against Millwall.

Wow that would be great Rob.

I will PM you with my mobile number and see what we can sort.

TP meet up at the Valley

Don't forget my card Rob :D

And don't forget it's an early kick off

I miss my 300 :( one of the best shapest lens I ever had.. sold to stewart the lensforhire guy.... many times I wish i still had it :(

However I have never regetted getting the 400 :) I just couldnt afford both..

Ive been looking at the new Sigma Tony, 120-300 from edge of the box would be perfect.

I did like having a 300, was a good length at places where you sit on the side like chelsea and west ham, but all in all i prefer the 400.. :)

I used to love my 120-300 and usability its great... just never going to compare with a canon L prime... so quality beat usability for me.

perfect for junior footy. ice hockey and a few other things.... but the 400 gets me loads of cricket work in summer... if I had to choose then I would same as you.. the 400

I leave it a bit late sometimes swapping from the 300 to the 70-200, so it will be interesting on Saturday.

All sorted with Mr Fish to do a swapsey for the match.

I was thinking 1st half on my 1D4, and second half on the 1Dx I borrow from my brother. I remember Tony you saying that you were worried about the lack of 'reach' when you got the 1Dx, but saying that you had no problems with cropping.

My 1dmkIV is such a sweet combo wiht the 400.. pin sharp at f2.8 that i only tried the 1dx on 400 a few times.. i did do a full match last thurday liverpool v everton womens with 1dx+400

hmmm the quality of the 1dx is so good that a heavy crop other side of pitch works just as well as using the mkIV and maybe even edges it slightly :)

i am trying to get another 1dx right now in another thread but need 1700 for the mkIV and only being offered 1500 so :(

so yeagh.. the 1dx and 400 works :)

Yes I saw that 1Dx you are after and thought it's a good price.

Just sell Julie's car for £200 and you're sorted

I love my 400mm, couldnt ever see me going back to a 300mm, it allows you to get stuff from other end, as an example, heres a link to a try photograph taken by a collegue

And heres my photo of the exact same try but taken from the opposite corner of the pitch about 110 metres away

Sorry I have no idea.

I am told to save as 25 in on the long side and at 180dpi. I delete all the originals and bin the Lightroom catalogues the day after the match.

if that crop was originally from a full frame 1DX at 100 metres away then resized to 4500px then viewing it at 100% that end file must make for horrible viewing

It was on the 1D4.

How would it have looked on newsprint though?

Rob

Thanks for the loaner for the match. Phew it's mighty heavy even on the monopod.

No they are too heavy. If I had the money I would trade in my 300/2.8 II and pay the extra for the 400/2.8 II.

A great lens though.

Was it the 400mk2 you were trying out...it's a lot lighter than the mk1 IS

Nope it was a mark I.

I am thinking that I will not have money to upgrade to the 400 II anytime soon, so maybe I should see if I could get a late model mark I in exchange for the 300 II.

Are you going to swap now then Robin ?

Actually thinking about it sensibly I will have a think about it. See about getting a late date code mark I IS model.

I see Fixation have a couple. But I would want a pretty late unblemished model.

Tony

Do you ever use a 1.4x extender on the 400? I seem to remember you saying that you hated the 2x extender - or was it both extenders?

If you use the 1.4x how do you find it e.g. loss of quality and speed of focus?

Cheers gary, do you stop it down a bit?,
seems a b####y good combo. I need to stop my down to f5.6

I find the extenders poor.. the only time I use the 1.4 is with the 70-200 on a nice day at around f5... not every shot hits wiht an extender and the quality is not as good as without.. I have to use it at f8 on the 400 to get decent shots and again not all brilliant..

on the whole I find things much better without... keeping the 1.4 as its a mkIII and may be usefull now and then... but the x2 is a mkII and I simply never use it.. need to get rid really as collecting dust..

with every camera and lens combo I ahve never been happy wiht extenders..

Yep I just can't seem to get on with them either.

I know Gary liked one on his 400 but as he's retired now.....

The Canon 1.4 slows down focusing and sharpness.

I think all converters will.. but its by how much and is it noticable... so minute on garys setup that he either doesnt notice or its nothing of any issue... with mine i notice.. mines a far diff setup.. plus nikon dont seem to ahve the same calibration issues as canon... body/lens combos work out the box.. canons dont always.. so a converter may need a different calibration to just the lens..
