Thinking of getting one of these as an upgrade from my Nikon 24-85 3.5,4.something, and would like your thoughts on it. Pro's & con's etc

TIA

Got one on my D700 after a reccomendation from puddleduck after being dissapointed with the Nikon 24-70mm.

To say i'm pleased with the results from it would be an understatement :D

Yes you lose 4mm on the wide end and gain 5mm on the long end, but other than that it's more than a match for the Nikon lens.

Thanks mate

They do seem to get well reviewed, but it's always nicer to get a thumbs up from someone you (sort of) know.

Not the easiest lens to find to buy though. Park Cameras isn't too far from me and at a pretty good price i think. £289

I am looking for a lens for a Nikon in this range too. What was the issue with the Nikon 24-70?

Any sample pics from the Tamron?

Thanks

Edward

Not familiar with this lens (yet), but I have the 17-50 2.8 and the 70-200 2.8 Tammy's... 17-50 is awesome and the jury is still out on the 200mm.

If the IQ is anything close to the 17-50, would be a great piece of kit.

Thought you be happy :)

Its just one of those lenses that, in my opinion, is hyped up by Nikon die-hards and does not quite live up to the hype.

When mine arrived i still had the Olympus E-3 and the 'stellar' 12-60mm SWD and it just didn't match the much cheaper 12-60mm for sharpness and general all round performance. I was also surprised by the sheer size of it, especially when the competition can do the same in a smaller, lighter package. Yes the metal constuction would account for this and is more than likely bombproof, but for my general shooting it cannot match the Tamron.

Yeah, I just got one, but I think there's something wrong with the aperture diaphram, which is causing it to stop down incorrectly and therefore overexpose... so it's not a very good first impression.

Tamron seems to really be hit or miss...

I'm bringing mine back today and maybe exchanging it for a Nikon lens. This was the first third party lens I tried, and it really let me down :(

The lens has a good reputation but wouldn't be my first choice simply down to the usefulness (to me) of its range. I've got the Tokina f/2.6-2.8 28-70mm but am more likely to use the slower Tamron 24-135mm. Now that I need something in Nikon-mount I'm thinking about the old 35-135mm. I've got f/2.8 35-105mm covered with an Adaptall-2 lens, but it's a trombone zoom which can be annoying with a manual focus lens.

I think the range of this lens would complement the Tokina 12-24mm f4 nicely.

I'm considering the Tokina/Tamron lenses to extend the range over my current Tamron 17-50mm f2.8.
