Anyone have any experiences with MPB?

Yes
I bought a lens from MPB and it arrived yesterday. An expensive lens - £9750 for a Canon rf 600mm f4 prime. I don't love that it didn't come with the box but it also didn't come with a strap (pretty essential I would have thought), the filters that come as standard or instructions. The strap in particular has annoyed me and it is making me wonder about the company more generally. Is this normal to not have some of these basic things with a used lens? Anyone ever have any issues with them? I emailed them and naturally they haven't responded. The number listed on their insta also doesn't work - things that also concern me!!

It didn't mention the instructions and I don't really care about that - they don't tend to mention straps on any of their cameras but I assumed that's cos it's like not including the lens hood or something - like it's an essential part of the camera. Or is not including a strap pretty normal when buying used?

I have only ever sold to MPB.

Having said that, IIRC somewhere in their terms(?) they mentioned that the inclusions will be what are listed and nothing else

I don't doubt that they accept buyins that may not have the as new box contents and quote & pay as appropriate.

So, if the description doesn't mention an item then don't expect it to come with it as if bought new retail items.

As above if it isn’t listed you won’t get it.
You can email them or phone and tell them that you don’t want it without the strap/box/whatever and they will pick it up free of charge.

I bought a used Fuji X-T1 from Camera World in Chelmsford a couple of years ago and the guy made a big deal about the fact that it came with a strap.

I've never had any problems with MPB, although I have read about some people's bad experiences on here.

They always list what is included in the description, so if those things were not listed then they didn't have them to sell either. OTOH if they were listed then get in touch with MPB. Don't forget you can return it within a short period if you wish under distance selling regs.

another reason why I but direct from Japan apart from saving a load of money.. Their adverts usually under estimate the product quality. If it is "near mint" upwards then having now bought four or five lenses this way it is hard to tell them from new.

Brian many years ago Wimbledon was one area I worked for BT. 30+ years on I suppose it has changed a lot. Wimbledon tennis fortnight was a menace trying to get jobs done

Having been stung by them once I try to avoid them either buying or selling ,for that sort of money I would return it and look at new ones on the grey market .
What really bothers me is IF ? You have a problem within the warranty period how do you get in touch with them as you have already found out there customer service is virtually non existent ..
Wex is far far superior in every respect and there customer service guys bend over backwards to help you .

And further to the above just checked and you can buy the exact same lens brand new from Cotswold cameras for £9,999 ..
milords I rest my case

I've used MPB several times and only had one problem with them but it wasn't worth falling out over.

That said, LCE are now my go to and will probably remain so for the foreseeable, they are excellent. (y)

That's all I need to know. I've requested a refund (although I note on their website that said refund is based on the item not being as described - it does have a couple of scuffs I was hoping not to see) and based on what others have said I am hoping they won't resist. Them picking it up for free even better but I highly doubt they will do this.

Returns

What’s Covered

All used kit purchased from MPB is eligible for return within 14 days of delivery, as long as it’s in the same condition as when received and includes all original accessories.

If an item isn’t quite right or isn’t performing as expected, we’re happy to help with basic troubleshooting or suggest alternatives before setting up a return.

I've sent back twice.

I have been saying this for years.

MPB .... They will call everything and anything "Like New". Would you get a new lens that doesn't have a box, scratched without some accessories?

LCE .... They take photos of the box sometimes, and the reserve button include a box where you can ask them questions and i've always had an answer within the same day.

In defence of MPB..

when I was looking for a Nikon 500mm f4 2 years ago I was trawling a lot of retailers who had the G or E versions for sale in 'Excellent' or 'As new' or 'just serviced by Nikon', MPB was the last resort for me as I was less than pleased with some of the re-evaluations on the kit I sent them. However, of the retailers, only MPB mentioned in the description if their lenses squealed and a lot of them did have the dreaded squeal and priced accordingly. Calling other dealers, when challenged, said the lens didn't but on testing they admitted the lens in their stock did... I ended up with a mint 500/4 E FL from MPB with no squeal and all the bits in the box.

Same good service with my OH's Canon EF 300/2,8 Mk2.

Must admit I've never had an issue with MPB and I've had some expensive kit like you from them. When they advertise anything, what comes with it is listed by the side and if it didn't say strap then it will not have come with one. Dd you get a screenshot of the product page before pulling then trigger?
As for filters, my 400mm f/2.8 came as supplied new with the holder. If you are talking about polarisers then I'd check with Canon to see what gets supplied from new.
Not sure about the grading of items but I know my 400mm was listed as excellent and when it arrived I would have said mint.
Always check the likes of LCE too as I have been more than happy with anything I have had from them and their customer service as always been excellent.

Just bought a Peak Design wrist stap and tabs from LCE, literally, an hour ago, and just got the e-mail to let me know it's been dispatched. I wouldn't mind betting the package will be here, in the post, tomorrow lunchtime.

Excellent service from them, as always.

I don’t think Canon supply a strap with this lens according to the specs on their website.

Well, I found this on the Canon UK website........ re: what is in the box. Says "Lens Wide Strap B" though as discussed, the fact that it is sold new retail has the strap is no guarantee that when sold to MPB that all the original items were sold with it. Hence, unless MPB explicitly list it......don't assume it will be included!

What’s in the box

Everything you need to capture beautiful detail on your travels, just add a memory card and camera case

  • RF 600mm F4L IS USM
  • Lens Dust Cap RF
  • Drop-In Screw Filter Holder 52 (WIII) With 52mm Protect Filter
  • Lens Cap E-185C
  • Lens Hood ET-160 (WIII)
  • Lens Soft Case LS600
  • Lens Wide Strap B
  • User Manual

I found a different listing which did not include a lens strap! For a £14k heavy lens I expect most owners replace the £40 Canon strap with a 3rd party heavy duty strap.

Hopefully the OP will enjoy the lens and will post some images. I can only dream of owning such a lens.

Used them many times, buying and selling, 4 occasions they've paid me more than quoted once they received the goods...only dissapointed once and that was minor and due to me not reading the description properly.
One word of advice though...If you buy something, take a screenshot of the listing as once you order it the listing dissappears so you can't go back and check.
As others have said, they list what's included in the add' so another good reason to take a screen shot. (y)

Everyone will have their own experiences and opinions but the fact remains that a buyer has 14 days to return an item if he/she doesn't like the deal for whatever reason.
Better to return immediately if you are unhappy than have the added regret of not being able to return it later.

My lad ordered a Nikon camera from Cotswold it’s taken a week to arrive , that gives me confidence in them as a company .think he was pretty surprised it turned up so quickly to

I see MPB are selling the Fuji X-E5 in "Like New" condition for £1209 - or you can buy brand new for £1199 (WEX, Park, Amazon or £1175 from Wilkinsons)!

Just a heads up, it looks like MPB have started using Evri for standard delivery rather than DPD., given the value of the gear MPB ship, this is a little bit disappointing.

Given shipping isn't free, this seems a bit of an own goal.

The option to use DPD is still there but only for the more premium delivery services.

I got home from work this evening to find a £200 lens had been sat on my doorstep for over 8 hours in the rain.

Ordered a few things from MPB a EF600F4 IS II and a EF 300 F 2.8 IS II ,

Had the 300 since the end of December, not really tried it much due to the weather, but put it on when i got it, all fine at 2.8, when i step down f4. 5.6 8 etc , makes a weird clunking sound focussing ,and jittery focus. But sounds fine and quiet at 2.8 and smooth. Its not the IS either.

None of my other lenses do this, trying to organise a return, no reply from a bot chat yesterday 24 hr later, tried ringing now, you get to leave a message after about 8 minutes, so hard to speak to a human there!

Having problems with MPB , i dont get any banging or jittery auto focus with my EF 300 2.8L IS or EF 600F4L II IS.

Tried opening a paypal case, it got refused.

They say

I have been advised that our Product Specialists have now completed additional checks using both a native EF mount camera and a Canon R series camera with an EF–RF adapter. In all tests, autofocus performed as expected across the full aperture range. We were unable to replicate the slow or jittery autofocus behaviour described, just to be transparent.

The “banging” or thumping sound mentioned when focusing is consistent with the autofocus motor engaging, as this lens contains a large amount of glass and relatively heavy optical elements, and it is normal for the motor to produce a noticeable sound when moving those elements during autofocus, just to let you be aware.

Testing was carried out at multiple apertures, including f/2.8 and higher values such as f/5.6 and f/11, and the autofocus remained consistent and responsive throughout. Based on these checks, the lens appears to be functioning within normal operating parameters.

As we have not been able to reproduce the reported fault and the lens is performing as expected in our testing, we will be proceeding with returning the item to you.
