Could you tell me if when off camera it makes a noise when twisted in hand ..
sounds like ball bearings of some thing loose . :'(
 
I'll see if I can find mine when I get home after work and have a twiddle - do you mean the zoom or focus ring?

Which body do you have? (just curious as there are not that many of us alpha users about)
 
Have looked into it .... and it seems its normal when off camera .

Sounds like quiet maracas .... lol .

Never noticed before ... If I hold the lens horizontal and twist gently in my hand I hear it .

But have read elsewhere that its the norm.

BTW I have an A700 and an A77

It's certainly not the norm for my copy. No rattles here.
 
I get friction noise when operating the focus and zoom rings but no rattles. I've always thought that the manual focus ring on mine could be smoother though.
 
Finally found mine, no rattles, clunks or anything else.
