Finally, it looks like some financial issues will be sorted in a month or two and I can start to add to my collection of glass. Now I have looked at several combinations and I am currently looking at possibly investing in the sigma 120-300, depending on performance when I hire it from Stewart next month. If I do go for this over the Nikon 70-200 vr, I will want a good walkabout lens that also fills the gap between my 18-70 kit lens and the 120mm end of the Sigma and was looking at the Nikon 18-200, but I fancy something a bit quicker, that isn't hugely expensive as eventually it will supplemented by the Nikon 28-70 F2.8 - so has anyone got or used and can tell me something about the Sigma 50-150 F2.8? I don't expect it to be perfect at the kind of price they sell for, but just some ideas about sharpness and IQ, especially when wide open, and how good the 150mm end actually is?

Thanks in advance guys

Hi lady lens, there a few reviews about it at the mo, and a few threads. from the reviews ive read, it is comparable iq wise with the canon 70-200L and the sigma 70-200. build quality is good, but only fits cropped sensors. there is two versions out, a mk1 and mk11. the mk1 supposedly suffered with the autofocus at the short range. ive just ordered one of the mk11 for canon. stuck to a uk lens, due to the warranty thing, and not overly confident in sigmas QC(heard bout a couple of duff lenses, and want to make sure i can get it changed if i get one). but Warehouse Express are doing the canon fit for 470-480 at the mo for the mk11. dontknow whether you noticed, but it is bout half the weight of the canons and the sigma, making it very apealing. ill let you know once i get it, but only ordered last night so i wont get it till monday

no probs, if i forget, give the thread a bump towards the end of next week:thumbs:

Well, its ordered! Got the version II, which has, according to reviews in various places and real time usage on ...*ehem*.. other forums [ :suspect: ] had its near focusing issues sorted, so hopefully will make a good complimentry space filler between the 18-70 and the next on the list, the sigma 120-300, but that will have to wait a few more weeks yet :D

Its a nice little lens. I borrowed one for a couple of shoots, though it was the MkI. Fortunately it didn't suffer from any focussing issues. I found the centre performance wide open to be very good. Toward the corners it was slightly degraded. Though, generally your subject is close to centre frame whilst using a telephoto so it didn't effect the overall image quality very much.

What I found very convenient is the lens size. It is less conspicuous due to its smaller overall size. The length of the lens does not change when zooming and auto focusing either. Which is very handy.

I don't think you will be disappointed. I would of bought one if I didn't already have an 80-200. Make sure you wont be upgrading to a 35mm digital sensor anytime soon though.

Certainly not soon, which was part of the consideration, I am looking at investing in glass for a year or 3 before bodies are changed, plus even when I do finally move on, I will be keeping at least one crop sensor body so it will always have a use I think ;)
