Hey all,

So far, I've had a bad day. I awoke to the sound of police at my door, and my flatmate showing me evidence of a break-in. (I sleep very heavy).

Upon cursory inspection of upside-down room, I noticed a broken laptop was missing, then the horror hit. Some scuzzball had swiped my beloved Nikon D40, and the Sigma 70-300 lens I'd only recently bought for it.

So, two questions: Is it proper to announce further details of it in case someone in my local area spots it? (long shot I know, but worth a try).

Also, I really liked that camera, and may face the prospect of having to replace it. Fortunately I still have my 18-55 and 55-200 Nikon lenses, and my filters, so would stick with Nikon. What would be a good equivalent/step up that would fit these lenses? I did look at the D90, but to be honest, I'm put off by the video features - it smacks a little of the compact market to me.

Has anyone used one? Or can suggest something else? I'm getting married soon, so budget is an issue.

Thanks

Rich

Hi Rich,

First of sorry to hear about the bad news. :shake:

Secondly, what do you think your budget will be? Must you buy new?

I would look at a D60 if you can't stretch to a D90 however if you are considering the D90 please don't write it off due to the HD Video feature. ;) Nikon have done probably too good a job with their marketing of the D90 so much so that people who haven't used it refer to the HD Video aspect rather than the camera. :bonk:

The D90 uses a very similar/the same sensor as the D300 and builds on the D80 which was an excellent camera in its own right. The D90 delivers on practically every front, improving on the D40 (I've owned both) - I never used the video feature but for me, it should be seen as an added extra not a drawback (after all it is a D-SLR with video not a video with a camera).

If you don't fancy a D90, I would use the money to buy a secondhand D200 body or add a little to it and get a D300. You will notice a big difference in handling and build quality.

Cheers..

My budget would be relative replacement value - The D40 I bought for £300, and the lens was £195, UV filter £15, Remote (I do a fair bit of landscape photography) and tripod mount. (Ow! It adds up when it's attached to your camera)

I was intrigued by the D200 as an option. I take it that the limitations on D40 lenses didn't work the other way round?

No, you should be able to use almost all Nikon fit lenses including some great older MF lenses on the D200.

It's quite a good price for the body only, pro-spec features, definitely worth looking into! Saw the review on Steve's Digicams (a preferred review site) and it seemed quite similar in menu layout, button layout etc, except with extras where added.

I'll have to look at the budget post-wedding. 3 weeks without a camera :'(

ISO performance on a D200 is poorer than that on the D40 let alone the D90. :)

Sorry to hear about that :(

I had my old D2x, 70-200 VR and Sigma 105 macro stolen in Nov 2007. I mentioned it on a few forums asking people to keep an eye on ebay for thsoe items for sale with no boxes etc. Of course heard nothing back, but sometimes a long shot is better than no shot at all?!

Go around some of the local 2nd hand shops and these pawn broker type places that seem to pop up everywhere, ask them to give you a call if someone tries to sell on a Nikon and has no proof of purchase. It's worth a try, I'd assume you'd have it insured but catching the thieving gits would be nice.

Might be worth checking out the Fuji S5 Pro if you are into landscape photography? Dont know much about it myself apart from the fact its meant to be a good landscape photography camera. Also most if not all nikon lenses will work on it I think! I stand to be corrected though!

Hi Rich,

Sorry to hear of your news. Never has the :( emoticon been more appropriate. :(

Don't see why not. You could phone up the local paper & get them to do a whole "the impoverished student planned to make a career of photography upon graduation, but is now unable to complete the necessary coursework to complete his assignments" thing.

You never know, such an article might get seen by someone who's offered the camera by a bloke in the pub.

Stroller.

yo don't need high ISO for landscapes, they don't move about much:D

I can lend you a D40 until you insurance sorts it out if you like

Sorry to hear about this mate. Id be hacked off if mine were stolen.
On the bright side at least you can get a better cam.

well fwiw,

I live in Abergavenny, South Wales. The camera was a Nikon D40 with a Sigma 70-300 lens with a Jessops UV filter attached. On the strap is a remote pouch without a remote in it (it's sitting on my desk), and a 2gb Ultra II SD card.

Otherwise, I'm still looking at a new body. My fiancee received a sizable sum of money from a friend for our wedding gift, and she's offered to put that towards the cost of a new one. She's getting interested in photography, so it's a nice dual-person investment...

Sorry - no other way to get in touch : "wack61 has exceeded their stored private messages quota and cannot accept further messages until they clear some space."

Hi
Sorry to hear this
There are two things you might like to think about.

1. Are you covered with house content insurance? You will be able to claim for it, you’ll need the Police incident number.

2. Ever photo taken with it was have the serial number in the EXIF so it might be worth putting it around to the photo processors and if anyone with a file from that camera then you know who go it and the police will act on it.
The police might like this info anyhow
Best of luck

I've no doubts this is true but the high ISO performance is better than the reputation it has. I've taken usable shots at ISO 1600 previously and that is perfectly adequate in all but the most demanding of situations!

Typically I never really shot above 400... Except in exceptional circumstances. I guess my photography (being mostly agricultural/people/landscape/flora & fauna) doesn't really merit higher ISO ranges.

wack61 has very kindly offered to loan me a D40 body until after my wedding/honeymoon and I can sort myself another one out. The agreement is : a period of 1 month, with a £125 if I damage/drop/etc the camera.

Thank you so much. This kind gesture means a lot to me and my fiancee, which was starting to take an interest in photography too...

We have exchanged addresses, and this is an open post to allow myself and wack61 to be accountable.

Again, thanks for the help, and all the other advice I've received.

Rich

all I wanted was a reminder who had it as i'm notorious for deleting PMs then forgetting who has it :D

It'll be in the post today fro del tomorrow before 1pm

Never really considered Contents insurance, a first floor flat in a church *was* reasonably safe, or so I thought. My fiancee (wife to be in a week!) have agreed to get insurance as a priority.

Had a friend offer the sale of their D80. Giving that some thought...

you might want to add the body/lens serial numbers(s) just in case it ever appears on flea bay
You'll need them for the police report as well
Worth making even if there's no insurance - sort of establishes your position

This forum never ceases to amaze me. Good on you wack61:clap::clap::clap:

Just bumping this up to see if rich is back yet

I'm a good way away but I'll keep an eye out locally and warn the guy who runs one of our local camera shops, he's very good with anything like this.
We bought an S5pro for a training camera, one of our togs swopped it for a D2x and won't give it back he likes it so much. Wayne

This is why this is one of if not the best forums on the web,
Well played that man.

nice one darren its good to see not everyone is bad

I'm not sure i'd do this again, it's proving difficult to get the camera back , we agreed a month, it's been the best part of 2 months now and despite me sending a reminder 10 days ago still no camera :(

Sorry to hear about that mate.

A second hand D200 would set you back £539 second hand, that was my quote for the camera. Is that out of your price limit? D60 is £350 new, Just depends on your budget.

Still has not been online here since 29th April :(

I guess you know his address since you sent the camera there... :bat:

I have his address and a work number as well as a mobile so I should be able to contact him, i've just left a message so we'll see if I get a reply.

I'm fairly certain i'll get it back , if it were me i'd have sent it back as soon as I returned from my honeymoon but that's me.
