Hi...At work (i work for a communications company) i have been given the task of brightening up the reception area and i'm doing this by using large photo canvases. One of the photos i want to use is of a racehorse as the company deal with the bloodstock sales.
I did actually go out and take a load of pictures at the sales which are fine but i've decided they are a bit boring and don't give the effect i was looking for!

This is where i want to ask a favour???
Does anyone have a photo/photos of racehorses actually racing that you are willing to let me use please??
I was wanting a nice action shot but am open to any suggestions.

Thank you so much to anyone who can help

Thanks

How much do you have to spend on the image?

well i was looking for a free image

i know there are companies out there that you buy from as i've just been looking but they are soooo expensive.

obviously i understand that professionals will most likely not want to give their images away for free but maybe people like myself would?? Who knows, and if you don't ask...and all that :)

Tell you what, I teach photography and regularly shoot equestrian events. Would you like to book a few lessons, then you can shoot your own?

Thank you Jon but i'm in Doncaster which is a bit of a drive away from Somerset. Not to worry, it was a long shot. The races are on in Doncaster next week so i'll go along and snap away.

Inches, Rob? Surely its cm these days? I think Mariah's hoping for more like m though.

When you get to the races, ask if you can get in for free just to take some pics ;)

See how that one goes.

Last time I went to the races they let me in free because I was taking pictures - in fact I got paid to go and take pictures - so worth a shot.

Ask for free drinks too while you're at it then ;)

Great day out and I'm sure your shoot something your be happy with.

Avoid the winning line as its always crowded, best place is by the 1 furlong post as that's when the jockies push for home.

c'mon guys.

I know where you're coming from but do we really need to go down this route, again???

If you don't want to help, move on. :|

Thank you Greek, that's really helpful. I will see what i can do. I've taken snaps of race horses before when i've just been on a day out but never really had a project where i've got to do it before.

dod - thanks for sticking up for me.

I had no idea that people would take such offence and i honestly thought someone might just have a random photo hanging about that they wouldn't mind me using. I think the confusion on my part is that i might be on the wrong forum as i just take photos as a hobby and so have no value to my pictures. Therefore i will give them to anyone at no charge.I think (correct me if i'm wrong) people who have replied basically think i'm asking for their services as a professional photographer for free.

I'm also guessing from your reply that this isn't the first time a newbie has been slated!

I have a photo of a race horse you can use to print on to a canvas for your office.

If you measure the size of the canvas in inches and times the height by the width then put a £ in front of the number then that's the cost.

The best bit is that i nearly did the maths ;)

Mariah, I think the problem is probably because you said the images were for your company reception area, if it was your dying Gran and it was her last wish to have a pic of a racehorse, it may well be a different outcome.

Best of luck finding one, but I'm sure you could shoot something for yourself try shooting with a longer shutter speed, and get some nice blurry action shots, or maybe some abstract leg shots when they're all bunched up together.

Have fun :)

You could have this one for free if you like (seriously)

It may be a collectors item in a day or two

It is a difficult issue Mariah.

This forum is full of photographers of all skill levels and stages of professionalism. Some just trying to break into the market will offer images free, or at least very cheaply, in the hope of getting a foot hold which very rarely, or never, happens. Those requesting the images just move onto the next hopeful and the established professionals see more damage being done to the profession. Very often those looking for the images are using them commercially and that very understandably doesn't sit well with professionals trying to maintain a business. Why should it?

The thing is that this forum doesn't distinguish between professional and amateur. That can cause conflicts but that shouldn't be an issue that you are subjected to.

Personally, I wouldn't give you an image free of charge because of its' final use but I realise that some people will be happy to. I'm guessing that you won't give most of your services free of charge either and I would encourage you to speak to your management and try to get a budget so you can buy something which enhances the public face of the company and portrays the right image (no pun intended).

This.

As someone said, if it was for personal use,or a gift for an ill relative or something, no problem. But asking for a free image to blow up and make a canvas from for your employers is a little much. The responses here were reasonable considering: You wouldn't ask any other trade person for a freebie, photographers are constantly asked to offer up their work for nothing. It's just how it is.

Some don't mind, you've been offered a couple of choices.

school run done and children fed!!!

dod and latest reply cagey75 - I completely understand and would have never asked if i had realised that this was a place for professional photographers where it's their business. I honestly thought it was just a 'lets chat photography' show each other our photos etc. place similar to another forum i'm on focusing on horses.

Thank you so much to nigpd and thank you to Peter Blandford. is Christian your son? I can't imagine what you and /or your family must have gone through and what an amazing thing to do setting up a website to raise funds for children like Christian. I will personally make a donation as i believe strongly in supporting any cause in aide of Cancer. Such a terrible thing to have to go through and so many loved ones lost too soon.
