Yes
Well, it seems that I'm not allowed nice kit. I bought a 24-70mm f2.8 last month and after a fall on a slippery path today, I now have 2. It's broken off just below the zoom ring and nothing appears to be broken on the larger piece - it's all on the small bit that was left in my camera!

I've left it with the shop I bought it from and they've said that there's a lead time of around 2 weeks on estimates, but can anyone tell me if I'm going to need lubrication or are Nikon repairs reasonable-ish (that sounds like a stupid question even to me, but I need some comforting!)

You actually managed to break the lens in two?? Good work.

Did you check to see if it is covered on your household insurance (if you have it), any single item under £1500 is covered on mine even out of the home, over that and I have to specify what it is.

Can't help on repair costs as have never managed anything so catastrophic :)

I think you'll need lube, if you have insurance, claim

I have contents insurance, but it's Monday and there's a slight easterly wind and a man with a green hat was playing the accordion precisely 6 hours and 37 minutes before it happened.

I was told when I took the policy out that my camera stuff would be covered, even when out and about, but my claim was rejected because my camera isn't covered for accidental damage anywhere. I hate insurance. Weasly little scumbags.

Ouch, my consolations... I took out insurance with aaduki after I found my household insurance only covered loss or theft away from home, not accidental damage! They really will do everything conceivable to wiggle out of paying a claim;)

sameagain,

Ouch is an understatement :(, sorry to hear you've done that to your lens. That aside, what on Earth are you planning to do with your lens that requires lubrication?

As for Nikon, my 24-70 AF-S went to them for a front focus issue and took them 6 weeks to get it sent back to me. Mind you, this was just before Christmas, so they may have been extra busy for the season.

I know of another forum member who's had better turn-around time with Nikon.

I sent my 28-70mm to Nikon repair centre and was sent an estimate within a couple of days. Again it was near Christmas and took a few weeks. Wasnt a problem though. Had good service.

Kev.

Oh yes, the service was fantastic. My lens came back in better condition that when it was new (if that's at all possible ); but I was really annoyed at having to wait for it for so long (close to six weeks).

...and a pretty big tube of it at that

I've had to send an 18-200 back for a focus motor - to be fair it 'only' cost £90 odd which isnt too bad I suppose and it was there and back in little over a week.

It does sound like yours is likley to be a rather more intensive job though :(

I wish I was still as innocent as you, my life went rapidly downhill when I got broadband :D

My 28-70 went for the same. It was somewhere near £345ish. :D

Who said anything about me being innocent ;) .. I just pretend to be dumb :p

Oww, you guys aren't helping! :(

I wish I'd taken a photo of it now, but as long as I didn't trash the motor or anything, it's only the mount ring that was detached, and there was nothing visibly broken on the big part of the lens. Hopefully they can just switch out the mount ring part and send it back. Think happy thoughts for me - I've only got my stupid iPhone for taking pictures til it gets back :(

Sorry :(

Kev got a 14-24 I had my eye on and got in there first - he's been taunting me ever since even though in his heart he knows its my lens :shake:

You have my greatest sympathy - Even though my stuff is insured I'd be beside myself with grief if something horrible happened to a 'baby' like that.

As I said - My 18-200 wasn't too bad pricewise and Nikon did the same as with Kev - they will estimate the cost first and let you know-they do it online so if you can get it approved ASAP and pay promptly at the end it shouldn't be away from you too long.

I do get the feeling costwise its gonna be more like the lens thiefs numbers than mine though - It would be nice to just let us know what it ends up costing along with a photo, so the next poor sod has a better idea what to expect.

Yeah. It's already gone off right now so I can't get a photo, but I'll definitely report back with costs.

I'm definitely going to look into some decent insurance after this. I'm mostly annoyed that I pay for insurance that I'm not getting. That and the fact that I trashed a lens I've been waiting to buy for like a year.

To be honest, if it's £345, I'll be happy.

And everyone knows the iPhone is hopeless for pictures....
Well mine is anyway

Damm that guy with the accordion, you must have the same insurance company as my mate. Wayne

Ooooh - just imagine what the bill is gonna be for that 14-24...

...doesn't even bear thinking about ;)

:lol::lol: Maybe I should think about selling it before it fails?? :naughty: Mmmmm...................................................

If you do decide to get insurance, give these a call. They were superb when I claimed for my 28-70mm.

I hope you get sorted.;)

Kev.

shhh you lot!

Got an estimate for the repair today. £400. I honestly thought it'd be more so I'm pretty happy.

Do you get to keep all the broken bits too? You know, like you did when you had your appendix out when you were a kid:D

Well, it's back! Seems good as new (it even has a new serial number!). Now all I need is some time away from my desk to actually use it.

I originally posted when I first broke it, so it's taken an age to get done!
