No
Hello everyone

I used to carry my camera (a humble Nikon D3000) around everywhere. But since I've started to do more mobile phone photography I'm hardly using the Nikon at all! I love the convenience of taking a photo with my phone, editing it immediately, then uploading it to Flickr, Instagram etc.

Has anyone else found themselves in the same boat?

I use my DSLR a lot less since I got a pocket digital compact to use alongside a film camera, not quite the same situation.. but it's reinforced my belief that for most occasions the inconveniences of a DSLR probably outweigh the advantages. Either that or I've been reading too much Kirk Tuck :D

How can you compare IQ with a phone camera over a dslr the image chip in a dslr is much bigger Sensor then in a any mobile phone today if you learn this you would find you phone sensor chip is very small like a P&S in fact you will miss out on the IQ.

No, but I have a Blackberry, and the camera on it is shocking!!

Thank you for being so patronising. I am fully aware of the huge difference in IQ. There is no way I could take images like these with my mobile. You've really missed the point of my post.

Or do you maintain that photography is only about image quality?

The improved quality of phone pictures saw me starting to take more and more photographs as I used to with 35mm. It invigorated my interest in photography and quelled my scepticism of digital (the quality) so in that respect mobile phones have increased my use of a DSLR

What did i not understand then?

Don't make me Laugh next you are going to tell me a P&S is better than a DSLR.?

Yes, in a fashion. I take more photographs with my phone (iPhone4) than with any of my cameras mainly because if I have trousers on, I have my phone on me.

I probably take as many photos on my phone in a day as I do with my dslr in a month. I use my x100 and Hexar a lot more though but still not as much as my phone I don't think.

I'm pretty far past caring about technicalities like image quality, resolution, iso performance etc so the lack of these things in the phone pictures doesn't concern me. Of course if I do need to create technically proficient images then I have the dslr and associated accessories.

At no point did I say anything about image quality, but according to you I need to "learn" don't I. What was you said? "if you learn this"....Could you be more patronising. The idea in creating the thread was not to say mobile phone camera sensors are better than DSLR camera sensors, yet you felt the need to point that out for some inexplicable reason. You have indeed missed the point of the thread. Still, got any more priceless advice while you're here? I'm sure we could all benefit from it.

it's the way you said it: But since I've started to do more mobile phone photography I'm hardly using the Nikon at all! so i replied about the sensor chip if i sound "patronising" i am sorry but i sometimes speak my mind.

No, If I feel I am going anywhere interesting I take my Nikon and its fitted with an 18-200mm lens. Covers most situations ok, not brilliantly in DSLR world but a million times better than my iPhone. Anyway, my camera bag has a small mobile pouch so I put the phone in that.

Unfortunately I'm a bit tight and wont pay a lot for a phone so the camera on mine is pretty poor but the WB and colour is better than the first pocket digital I bought and if the light isn't too strong it takes good enough shots and is quick enough when set to infinity so it doesn't have to mess about with focus. If there is strong light it does however blow the highlights way to easy and before any of my digital cameras do.

I use my DSLR less these days but I also take more pictures because I have a decent compact-ish camera and a couple of MTF.

If we weren't shooting digital, would we be concerned about this vague concept of "image quality"? You can have excellent image quality and it's still a bland and uninspiring image.

The aesthetic pleasure of an image will always come before technical image quality for most viewers, except perhaps for forensic or scientific photography.

Sharpness is over-rated.

I don't think I've taken more than a handful of photos with my phone despite having a owned a camera phone for over 10 years. It's just something that I never consider doing

Totally agree!................the moment that is captured and the memories that go with it are, for some people, more important than the actual quality of the image.
I for one would sooner have a poor quality capture of a moment I happen to come upon than have no photo at all because I didn't have my dslr with me.
In response to the OP, I personally don't use my phone camera very much at all, however I do carry a rather poor quality point and shoot with me when I go cycling, simply because there are so many beautiful scenes to photograph.
When I have the time, I occasionally return to the same spots with my dslr but of course that is already a different capture simply as it is a different moment.

So why buy a DSLR if you use your compact-ish camera?

A camera is a tool, I'll use the right one for the job. Sometimes that's a DSLR, sometimes that's a compact, sometimes it's a film camera. Sometimes a DSLR is just too big and too limiting for walkabout purposes.

I won't get all OCD about sharpness, sharp enough is good enough, and I'd always choose an image that's pleasing to look at over one that the only thing going for is is that it's sharp.

I think we've had this discussion before..

I cant say I use my dSLR despite having the best camera phone around.

I find using the black rapid strap making me take my Nikon out with me nearly every where. It is so comfortable and often have it on trigger ready under my jacket :)

But having seen some demos about iphoneography I definitely want to experiment more with that as well.

Ultimately it is bout getting the shot isn't it.

So why buy a DSLR if you use your compact-ish camera? "Woof Woof"

Michael,

I've already asked nicely for this not to turn into another argument thread.

By all means ask questions, express your opinion or otherwise contribute to the discussion with your own viewpoint. However, right now your posts are still coming across as confrontational and argumentative toward other members. I understand what you mean but for me IMO i think it's a bit of a waste a DSLR camera is going to be much better then a P&S also a film camera, i went from a film to a P&S now just a DSLR.

I look at it this way

Big Big Big sensor is large format
Big big sensor is medium format
Big sensor is full frame
Medium sensor is crop
Easy sensor is m4/3rds
Tiny sensor is your point and shoot
Baby sensor is your iphone
:)

So you're on medium sensor right now, how much more money will you have to spend on a big sensor and a big big sensor before you realise that it isn't making you any better a photographer?

Really? Although there are options for MF digital, film MF has been around for yonks and still wipes the floor with digital.

I think someone is still totally missing the point of this thread ;) Comprehension seems to be an art, this is not about how big ones sensor is, nor about the size of the sensor determines how good your photos is...

Not really.

I have a DSLR, MF film SLR, cheap compact and a phone camera. Not one of them can take a photo worth a jaffa cake.

I know because I've lined them all up and said, "Go on, take a good picture".

Being inanimate objects they just sat there and did nothing.

However, when I pick them up and apply my skills and knowledge, I've taken pictures with all of them that I consider to be pretty good and worth printing for my albumn or to hang on the wall.

There all just tools. Nothing more, nothing less. A good image is the result of the users knowledge, experience and creativity.

you mean size isn't everything???? ................I've gone all these years as a man believing otherwise !!! lol

You're on form tonight Alastair....Completely agree with all you say there.

I have a huge amount of gear of all differing formats and often struggle to get what I consider good photos. Sometimes the equipment does me no favours due to it's condition/age but i believe the primary issue lies with the operator...ME! Being somewhat inexperienced in photography, I have a great deal to learn and indeed practice.
I expect that there are many photographers on here who could obtain a much better photo than me from any of the cameras that I own simply because of their expereince and creative talent....;The equipment as has been said is simply a tool.
A phone with its small sensor is better than no sensor at all when DSLRs are forbidden somewhere and you really want that image...........what better way to get a sneaky shot!

Like you said last time a camera is just a tool the person behind the camera is the creative one.:)

Don't get me wrong, I completely agree, I was just pointing out the irony of saying digital is best whilst at the same time listing a number of formats that are still largely in the film domain :)

oh my jaffa cakes have been mentioned on this thread too ......be prepared to be gatecrashed by the jaffa cake munchers, alias the mods!!

The fun has gone out of this argument, Michael has started agreeing with me.. ..
