Anyone Else Have This Problem?

Hello all, hope this is the correct section for my question. Here is my problem:

I have a couple of 8GB SD cards. They have been used on both my D7000 (with which I didn't have this problem) and latterly my D610. Recently I have noticed that after doing a couple of shoots and filling an 8GB card when transferring to my computer it tells me it is transferring 15GB ("transferring 9.2GB of 15.6GB" for example) worth of data.

This has happened several times lately. How can this be? How can an 8GB card hold 15GB.

Thanks for any info,
Iain

I thought the D610 had two card slots. Is there one in the second slot?

Yeah but this is just one single card

?
Is the card still in the camera?

No in a card reader transferring at moment

Ah...
go to 'start' then 'computer' and see what it says about the card in the pop up.

I'd also add how are you managing your cards? Do you transfer the photos off the card in the reader onto your PC, then what do you do? Do you delete the photos off the card when it's connected to the PC? If you do I'd recommend
you to reformat the card "in camera" rather than format or delete the images when connected to your PC.

+1 on that.

Oh yes, always use the camera to format the card. It's more important that the camera knows the card state than Windows 'knowing' the card state. I format in-camera after every transfer to PC.

Yes I always format in - camera and also don't trust windows that's why I use a mac! Anyway, problem solved. It turns out I bought two 8gb cards that came were packaged in an 8GB packet. These cards have 8gb stickers on them. However on the back of the card in small print it says "16gb ". It seems I have scored two 16gb cards for the price of two 8gb cards. And someone at sandisk can't put the correct stickers on their cards! Delighted!

Hi Iain, well what a result!! I'm never that lucky I was going to ask if it was a Mac;)
Mystery over then with an excellent outcome.
Cheers Steve

So are they Genuine SanDisk?

Just what I was thinking.

I didn't want to think that:eek:

No, it doesn't.

And you don't need to reformat your card every time, either.

Sounds to me like my rock that repels tigers.

What? It doesn't repel tigers? Well, have you ever seen a tiger around here? No? Didn't think so. :)

OP: I think you've got fake cards. Where did you get them from?

No, it doesn't.

Yes of course you don't have to format ever time, I should have said " if you are having issues, format the card in the camera, rather than from the PC" :)

And I should have actually said ' Windows lies sometimes lies';)

Correction, they are not Sandisk (like my others) they are PNY. The thought of fake cards did cross my mind but I'm reassured in the fact that I've had no problems at all with them, they write very fast. I can burst off 8-9 shots on D610 and they are ready for more immediately. Bought from either PC World or Jessops as those are the only places I buy my cards.

Here is the front of the card with 8GB sticker:

Here is back of card with 16GB marking in bottom right corner:

Don't worry then, they should be fine, give them a good testing and enjoy!!

Ah! Wrongly stickered! Go back and ask for the correct stickers. No! Don't do that! Go back and buy some more from the same place.
