Yes
hi all finally made a 50 min trip to surprise view car park today, but when i got there the weather/mist was terrible and couldnt see anything, now my question is,where are the lakes i keep seeing on the photos and where does the path lead to,do people use the car park for astrowork, felt i was missing something today

If you park up just over the bridge and walk up the hill away from the road you get the cliff top which is the view over Derwent Water and Borrowdale.

There is more car parking further up the hill from Ashness bridge and the view point is opposite there.

If you park just past Ashness bridge you can walk up diagonally through the trees to a open area a bit downhill from Surprise view.

Very similar viewpoint but a LOT less people :)

thanks guys so is the car park mainly for astro work then and where do the paths lead from suprise view carpark, thanks

Thank you everyone. I'm shooting in this area tomorrow and was on the look for some ideas!

More than half of the Cumbrian National Park seems to be occupied by transient vistors who scarcely step away from their cars (it's held to be good for the local economy, so the inaugration of passport control's been held at bay). Some are photographers, and some of those are seeking to take the same colour postcard shots that've been popular for about three generations now (and longer in monochrome). So be it. The freedom to wander is a good old British tradition (we used to have an Empire).

Yes, I have. I remember it vividly.
My wife and I visited there whilst on our honeymoon 17 years ago.
It was a nice day and I've got a picture of it on celluloid somewhere, digital wasn't available back then.
Ps, it's the Derwent.
