Thinking about taking family (3 kids, 1 wife :)), to Croatia for a week in August. Anybody been and provide an insight regarding where to stay, what to do, etc?

Big country, long coast line, lots of islands to choose from.

I havent but know two people who have. Two words they agreed on; Very Hot. Had to retire to air conditioned apartments between 11 and 3 I think it was.

apparently very nice very friendly.
a mate of mine biked arround there a few years ago.
couldn't fault the place he said.

How about if you want mainland & not an island?

I'm reasonably sure it won't be hotter than Greece or Turkey at the same time of year, so all the usual warnings about temperature will apply.

We spent a very pleasant week in Cavtat a year ago and had a great time. The bus to Dubrovnik was £2.50 and any of the half hourly ferries back £5.00. In early October the temperature was in the low 70's f and plenty of people swimming. The food was disappointingly (?) more Italian than anything else as we were hoping for more Greek or hopefully real Croatian whatever that may be. Our visit was certainly positive with friendly and helpful people and I'd happily return for a look at the rest, major part of the country.

I too had a holiday in Cavtat a few years ago. I thought the area and country was an ideal place to holiday, as mentioned, mid August was a bit too hot and nearby Dubrovnik too busy with cruise ship tourists.

I would love to go back to Croatia and would certainly recommend it based on my two weeks there.

Beautiful country, I've been there twice. Once on a motorcycle jaunt across Europe (the coast road is fantastic) when I only spent a couple of days there and once with herself a couple of years ago. We got a ferry over from Venice and hired a car, taking our time to drive down through the country to Dubrovnik, where we flew home. Particular highlights would be the Plitvice Lakes national park, which has some stunning views and great walks, Split and Dubrovnik itself, particularly if you're a Game of Thrones fan as apparently lots of it is filmed in the old city and surrounding area. I've never seen it but t'missus is a fan, along with coachloads of American tourists following the guided tours. My favourite spot is Rab island and the town of Rab. Old medieval winding streets, lovely architecture and some great restaurants.

We've booked two weeks in Croatia for late August. A friend highly recommended it to us and we've gone the adventurous route of hiring a car to drive from Dubrovnik to Zagreb whilst stopping at various points on the way. Oh and not to mention two kids in tow.

Did you book a package deal or sort everything yourself?

We did a weeks holiday to Croatia a few yes ago, very enjoyable indeed, we stayed at a B&B about ten miles from Dubrovnik. We simply used the local bus to mainly go visit Dubrovnik Old Town quite often, but be aware, the 'Old Town' most days can be SWAMPED with tourists, I mean it's bad, the cruise ships land and swarms of tourists get bussed into the Old Town which is beautiful in it's own right.......around lunch time is probably the worst time to visit the Old Town due to extreme amounts of tourists, avoid.

We seen probably the BEST sunsets in Croatia, absolutely stunning and try make time to actually sit back and enjoy these sun settings, utterly stunning...!!!
The coastline around Croatia is simply STUNNING as mentioned here before, I would have loved to take my touring motorcycle to experience this in full, but we flew there & back the last time we visited a few years back.

Just one last comment, if you get a chance try visit Krakow City which is really beautiful, they've still the original trams running and there's plenty there around the City to see and do, an amazing place..!!!!!!!! We will return to Krakow soon, we loved the experience.

We went to Rovinj. Lovely town. Took a day trip to Venice across the water. It was very hot during the day as per an earlier post. We asked about going in spring for milder temps and were told that it was either hot or cold nothing in between! Make sure you get air con as we probably would not have slept much without it.
