If you know anybody who will be in/around N.India the last two weeks of August or if you fancy a once in a lifetime adventure to Leh/Zanskar/Ladakh area of the Himalayas. I need to get a small group together to split costs on Jeep hire/guides, would be a fairly low budget trip except for flights. Think mountainous deserts, 16000ft passes, tibetan buddism and this is the backdrop

ooooohhhh if i had the money and no ties i'd be there in a shot - i went to nepal a few years ago when i finished uni - did the everest trek/base camp, pokhara lake and the annapurna circuit - 10 week trip, absolutely fantastic people and scenery.

Just tying up the itinerary and to say I am excited is an understatement!
 
Gah, how I wish I was younger, fitter with no home commitments I would join you without doubt.

You are going to one of the most beautiful places on earth and somewhere that I would put on my "Bucket List" if I had one! I am seriously green eyed you lucky so and so!! :sulk:

I hope the trip is everything you expect and more and I look forward to your blog posts and images, if I can bring myself to view them that is lol! :)

Thanks Andy, it really does look incredible and from everyone I know that has been they say the same thing. It's a shame you can't come but thanks for the kind words!

Hopefully, yes. Sucks.... At least it was a pro thief instead of a fellow traveller. another hostel got hit the same day too, presumably by the same guy.

Hopefully it should make it easier for insurance then :thumbs:

Unfortunately nothing planned for the foreseeable future but I will drop you a line if I am that way any time soon :)

A shame, I am heading there next year, about that time. I was in Manali a couple of years ago and did a couple of excursions on a motorbike to catch the spectacular scenery but was gutted to not do the trip around Leh. Everyone I spoke to said it was fantastic.

Hi guys costing have all come through so here is a basic breakdown of what you may expect to pay

Flight

Connecting flights Delhi – Leh RTN http://travels.indianbackpacker.com ~15-16,00Rs
Manchester Delhi flights RTN – Qatar have some great prices (They are a great airline too) ~570GBP

Transport and Guide

Transportation for all Sightseeing by Toyota Qulies/ Scorpio - 39,500Rs
Guide costs – 1200 Rs/day (15,600Rs total)

Accommodation

Average price - 500Rs per day

Inner Line Permits

Valid for 7 days – 200 Rs + 50Rs per day (Trip total no more than ~1000Rs)

Visa

UK national Indian visa - £92

Food

Approx 300 Rs day

Entry Fees

Approx 50Rs day

Basic total cost (excluding personal costs, contingency, drinks, tips etc.)

97,825RS = £1167GBP

I have also found that it works out cheaper for flights to go on 18th August – 1st September (4th September if you wish to stay for the festival). Hope this helps you to visualise total costs a little bit easier
 
Itinerary

Day 1 - Arrive in Leh

Day 2 - Take it easy in Leh, just roam around town and get familiar with it and avoid AMS, evening Visit to Leh Market & Shanti Stupa

Day 3 - Head out to Lamyuru. Look around the village and the monastery in the afternoon, overnight in Alchi

Day 4 - Explore Alchi monastery before heading to Likir monasteries and then back to Leh via Zanskar/Indus river confluence.

Day 5 - Visit Hemis Monastery, Thiksey Monastery, Stok Palace, and Leh Palace

Day 6 - Head out to Pangong Tso, overnight Spangmik camp.

Day 7 - Back from Pangong Tso to Leh stopping along the way to photograph landscape

Day 8 - Matho, Phiyang and a few others

Day 9 - Go to Nubra Valley overnight Hunder (camel safari if you want)

Day 10 - Nubra Valley to Leh, visit Diskit Monastery

Day 11 - Shey Palace, Take a dawn or dusk walk along the Indus river from Shey palace

Day 12 - Head to Tso Moiri via Khardung La (highest motorable road in the world), overnight by lake

Day 13 - Back to Leh via Tsokar Lake

Do you have room for one more, Its not a cert yet but I can make my own way there from Vietnam and meet you. I have just got to square it away with the girlfriend who is 5 months pregnant.:gag: Let me know if this fits in with your plans and if you have the space....

I would love to join you (has the money and no commitments) but we'll be in Venice - ho hum

however if you do a similar trip next year or the year after my name will be down. I want to see Everest and my hubby is not interested in joining me :lol:
