Hi,

I need to get a website designed for my work (Architects office) and need someone to put it all together, I have seen a few which I like and would like something similar.. Anyone on here design websites?

or

Is it easy to setup and do yourself? I do run my own wordpress.com blog, but not sure if a website is beyond my capabilities / time

easy peasy, find a nice responsive template, modify it to your requirement, job done.
 
How about you do not suggest someone does something illegal such as copying and using someones intellectual property

Did I say copy? NO I did not, did I mention stealing images ? NO I did not do not infer things into my posts, The layout ect is what the OP likes, by dlooking at the background of the site you can see how its made, or are you not allowed to use something you have seen ?

And your point is? are you suggesting that by downloading the site your doing something wrong ? as long as your not using the code and images for yourself what is the issue ? its a learning exercise.
 
in your opion obv not in mine yes were not going to agree on it..... its cool though people have different viewpoints

You said words to the effect of download the website and alter the content to the persons liking

A mod can easily clarify your exact wording as they will have a copy of the original post.

Your absolutely correct, alter, change, make different..... again its a tool for learning how thing are done obviously lost in translation.

I find it staggering, that as a professional photographer, you do not seem able to grasp the illegality of what you are suggesting

I guess its ambiguous at best, depending on exactly "how much" is altered.
Slightly different, but I know that Getty pursued someone to the ends of the earth, because they used an (Getty) "altered image" on a web site.

I've tagged @Marcel to make the final call on this, though.
 
lets be honest nobody would be impressed if a rival photographer copied there website ands "altered " their images etc......................

Your going to have to explain, so I look at the code of a site decide how its done and create something that looks alike, which if you want to be anal is a free open licence software platform with a free template. please point out the illegality in this situation, Not sure what being a photographer has to do with it either ? again it a tool to learn. You read the post wrong or it was a not made clear by me, but either way you got the wrong end of the stick, last thing I am saying on the subject, And as the mod who clearly wants to invoke an argument proves the word copy was not used, the word change was !

No argument here, the site has a duty to make sure everything is legal and above board, that's why I have tagged in a site owner,
if he knows the comments you made, linking the site, are above board and totally legal, he'll reinstate your post.
If not, they'll stay hidden.

So what do you think happens when you download the website? It copies it

You then suggest they change the site they have just copied to suit there needs

The website is that persons intellectual property, matters not if they used free software to create it.

Also the theme they used is a custom one.

What being a professional photographer has to do with it is one would have hoped you would have some understanding of the law regrading IP
 
be interesting if someone copies sorry changes your nice posh website then see your feelings on it....................................
 
Viewing a website, just like an image, means it needs to be downloaded and copied to your computer. It's not that that's the issue it's what you do after that could be a problem if you reproduce it, even in part.

If for example you keep all styling code but change all the graphics you have still essentially reproduced it.

Similarly with an image, even if you modify it and then use it you would breach copyright.

Many Web designers place comments in the stylesheet and code as a form of watermark to track use.

OK, plenty of replies. So can I do that on WordPress.com or is it more a WordPress.org based thing?
 
Wordpress .com and find/buy a suitable theme
 
Assuming you already have your own domain name and hosting (If not then get these)

Then download WordPress and install it.

Then get a suitable theme from somewhere like Themeforest, HERE

Depending on your current hosting you could set up as sub domain and install WordPress there and work on your theme/website until you are satisfied with the result - Then all you would need to do is transfer the finished website to your main domain
 
fire your hosting company an email and see what they say mate
 
The website linked to is based on the 2012 stock WordPress theme by the look of it so no need to steal it, as daft as idea as that would be.
 
I think the subject of wordpress themes is a tricky one as writing a new theme "from scratch" would require a lot of coding expertise - i use a barebones theme called "blankslate" that i downloaded and have tweaked it to suit my needs. I would love the expertise to cook a theme from bare code.

If there is any "analogy" with photography I'd say this is like taking your own photo yet using someone else's "lightroom preset" to "style" the photo

As a commercial organisation your online presence is one of your few shop windows. I would seriously get professionals involved for that to guide you through your requirements, build what you actually need, and provide the appropriate hosting platform

Just like many of us hire an architect or a photographer etc.

Yes sure you can bring it all together from "free" open source components, but having a professional with experience do that for you will pay for itself.

Is there anyway to run an offline wordpress site just to see if I can actually do it? without getting involved with FTP, hosts etc etc
