Hi guys,

I am editing a video at the minute, and one of the short clips only has audio in the left channel. It stands out like a saw thumb during playback.

The question is - does anyone know how to copy the left channel onto the right channel so that I have output in both speakers?

I realise it won't be stereo as such, but at least people won't think they have gone deaf in one ear half way through the video!!

Any help will be greatly appreciated,

Thanks

Gary

Can you not just change the balance of each audio track so that it's centered rather than the respective left or right? Or have I misunderstood the question? :P

I don't know, that is why I ask, I haven't worked with sound before. At the minute, there is nothing on the right channel, and I dont know if making the left channel quieter, and making the silence on the right channel louder, will help.
The way I saw it was a simple select / copy / paste action, but I can't see how to do it.

Can you not duplicate the track, put it on another track on th timeline.
Not had experience with Premiere but, in Sony Vegas you have the option to combine channels, if you can do that in Premiere, that's another option.
If you get stuck with it, pm me, if you email me the audio clip, I'll run it through Vegas to get it on both channels.
Pete

There should be some option like Pete said to combine to audio channels and make it mono which would just give you mono sound on that one clip so it wouldnt stand out.

I am happy with mono, I just don't know how to do it, and whether it will affect the whole sequence. I thought about duplicating it, but still only get audio in one channel, only twice!!
Thanks for your help so far, I will take you up on the Vegas offer if I can't sort it,
Cheers

Try a right click on your sound layer - it should bring up options to either duplicate or pan the sound. :)

Not sure from Premiere, but if you have Adobe Soundbooth you can open up the mono sound file.. there's a dropdown called 'tracks' just below the menu bar and you can then 'insert channels into new multitrack file'. from there a new stereo soundwave will be created with the left channel filled with your mono sound. Just drag the file from the left into the right channel and it'll duplicate the left into the right channel. Then use some effects such as 'chorus' to give the soundwave more of a stereo feel.

Sorry I know that sounds complicated but that's the first solution that came into my head.

Hope that helps :)

Thanks MC, I had a quick look at Soundbooth and just didn't know where to start. I tried to "ctrl c" the audio from Prem, and then "ctrl v" it onto a track in SB, but it wouldn't let me. I will have a look at your advice and see how I get on. FYI, the clip has been inserted into the timeline sequence and I only need to do about 15 secs. Do you think I will need to edit the master clip first and then drop it back in?
Thanks

I just right-click on the audio track timeline and get the context menu to insert straight into SB. Screenshot attached...

Once your SB edit is complete, simply exit and it will replace your mono track with the new stereo track automatically.
