Any thoughts on 300 F4 IS + Kenko or 400 F5.6L

Hi,

considering a couple of options as regards my 100-400 L ( which is sharp as a tack ) and that is to sell and get the following:

70-200 F4L used/new or used 70-200 f2.8L along with either a 300 F4 IS ( can use my Kenko 1.4 with this ) or a 400 F5.6L.

I already own a 28-70 F2.8L so either 70-200 would compliment pretty well and would really need at least 400mm for wildlife. How does the 400 F5.6 do with the TC on it or is the 300 F4 IS a better bet with the TC on it ( bearing in mind I'm slightly frustated with only having 400mm just now but just can't afford the 500 F4 IS - anyone want a kidney? ).

I also read somewhere that the 300 F4 IS can be hit or miss as far as getting a sharp copy is concerned but haven't seen any word of the 400 being the same.

All lenses to be used on my 30D when it gets back from the 'Hospital' ( owned it since April and never used it yet due to crap service from the supplier :bang: ).

Any help/thoughts ideas would be greatly appreciated.

Mike.

The 70-200mm f2.8 works ok with both tcs fitted upto 580mm.

The 400mm works better at 580mm, and is much sharper then the 70-200mm.

I have both lenses mentioned above, can post up pics of from the 400mm with a 1.4tc later. Debating weather to get a 300mm as well.

Comparison pics at 400mm from the 70-200mm at 400mm and the 400mm without the tc though

Hi,

thanks for your replay, I saw that thread this am found it very interesting, it certainly looks good for the 400 F5.6L although this misses out on the IS of the 300 F4 plus TC but is probably sharper. I have a decent tripod so IS being absent isn't a problem.

The cashback on the 300 F4 is also a factor in deciding which way to go

The 300mm f4 with 1.4 tc (420mm) isnt as sharp as the 400mm. I cant comment on how they both compare with a 2x tc, as i didnt have one nor did the shop when i conducted a simular test before diciding the route i wished to take..

The IS wouldnt help if tripod mounted as it dosnt work when fitted to one. (or so i was informed sure someone will correct me if wrong)

I need to to actually hire a 300mm tho to see if its worth me buying or not,
