I've just been asked by an agency to stand in for another photographer at the Davis Cup tie starting tomorrow at Braehead Arena. (Yes, they must be desperate to be asking me)

Haven't shot tennis before, haven't even been to a live match before.
I haven't uploaded live from an event before either. Thank goodness it's a sport with pauses.

Anyway, I'd be grateful for any advice on shooting tennis or any other hints

Tennis gets very boring very quick for a photographer... Once you have done a couple of sets all the pictures look samey.. If you can get to the side of the court then you will get the best shots IMHO . Dunno what to say really.. capturing is same rule of thumb as any other sport...

Just seen that I double posted - whoops!

Thanks Mark, that was a great read and plenty food for thought.

Cheers Tony. It occurred to me it would get samey. I thinking in terms of shooting 2 or 3 games, going back to transmit from the press room, then come back for the end of the sets.

Great read that.

Note to self - lay off the standard serving shot

Hi Dunc, I wasn't being funny, It was just the general view that tennis photography becomes boring after a few games/sets...Sort of much of a muchness...but looking at the images in the link that was posted above, just goes to show that there are lots of ways to shoot events. Its the guys with an open mind to getting the unusual or non standard type shots that do well.

I have heard it said a lot, don't be scared to try something different. I think the images in the link reflect this very well. Not to mention the high quality of all the images.

Thanks Tug. I was impressed with the variety too.
Just signed in here among a gaggle of seasoned pros. I'll have to look for something different I think.

If I were on a job like that Dunc, I'd make sure I got some standard shots then I'd go hunting for something unusual...Good Luck

Took me ages to get up to speed - just happy in the end to get what I could with the ball in! That was definitely a learning experience.

Also had a crisis. Covering the Andy Murray game - and the 'm' key on the laptop stopped working....
