Any Ricoh GR iiix owners?

I've pretty much set my heart on a Ricoh GR iiix for pocket rocket duties, just wondering if anyone has any long term feedback please? I had the 16MP =28mm version and was mostly happy with it but I seem to recall it had to go back for some repairs under warranty and I eventually moved it on when it got sensor dust I couldn't clean off. In fact, thinking about it, the warranty repair may have been sensor contamination, I think it got hair or fiber on it or something!

Is the new version better sealed and/or does the ibis take care of it? Any other observations, good or bad?

Ta

Just jumping in on your thread as I was about to post a similar one. I'm interested in a small camera that produces sharp photos and the GR iiix along with its focal length appears to fit the bill. Although I'm also tempted with the RX100 viii but its a smaller sensor or the Canon G5x Mk 3.

Ill follow any comments on your thread with interest!

I think it'll just come down to whether you're happy with a fixed focal or not. I use MILCs, but mostly with 50mm primes so I'm quite at home with it. Obviously =40mm is a bit wider than I'm used to but I like the angle of view.

I've watched a ton of reviews on these and what's stopped me buying one is the sluggish AF, apparently you really need to use the snap focus feature, not ideal. Doesn't matter how compact it is and how good the IQ is if it misses focus, especially in low light.

My Ricoh GRiii hardly ever misses focus and the snap focus option is great.
Having said that I use it for street and am rarely below f5.6, even so wide open it is still superb.
I have thought about the iiix but I like the wide view that I have and the image quality is great so it crops well when needed.
Never noticed any dust/debris on my images.

The 16MP one focussed acceptably, in good light. In the dark though, as you say...!

I'm hoping Ricoh addressed the sensor dust issue in the new versions. I don't think I was alone in having 'issues' with it!

I do like =28mm, but it's always stuck me as an odd choice for a general purpose camera. It's clearly and obviously very wide, although with careful composition you can make it look natural (unlike 24mm, which always looks distorted to me). Assuming you want it to look natural, of course! Personally I don't like obviously distorted perspectives, but of course that's completely subjective.

I have owned a GR3X, since last October. I find 40mm a bit wide, but I do love the camera. I sometimes find myself cropping quite a lot.

I look after it well, never put it in my pocket, preferring a little bag. (I'm thinking about maybe getting a bumbag). Not aware of any dust ...

Got one of these recently, nice compact size, fits a wide range of cameras, build quality is superb.

I haven't got around to using Snap Focus yet, I use Select AF, focus, hold shutter button half down recompose. When you focus, do it on a textured object rather than something shiny/blank. I'm used to it, no problem.

Thanks. I've got a little cross-body bag, not much bigger than a coat pocket.

Wong borrowed that camera from Matti Sulanto ... this is what he said:

This is the concern. I mean, you have to know when to stop worrying - dust is a fact of life and photography doesn't even particularly benefit from excessive hygiene! A little dust and grain sometimes helps keep it real. Within sensible limits. The trouble is when you get a large bogey or a hair on the sensor and of course you can't gain access to clean it off!

I'm a 50mm shooter through and through, but I can get along with 40. Just!

I think you can find dust on pretty much any sensor if you go looking for it. Stop down to f/16 or f/22 whatever it'll close down to and take a picture of a clear blue sky. You'll find dust!
