Hi,

I'm new to photograhpy and noticed theres alot of photograhpy magazines, I was wondering if there is any particularly good one or ones that some one could recommend to me? :help:

Thanks!

i personally don't buy any, so can't help you with an actual recommendation, but if you do a quick search on the forum i'm sure they'll be a fair few threads giving you some thoughts.

I bought a few, but most are made up of 50% adverbs and very little content.

You're better off with a book.

The only counter argument to this is that Practical Photography are running their dSLR Bootcamp course over the next 6 issues, so might be worth looking out for that.

Especially as you can get 6 issues for just £10. (or cheaper with discount sites, see above thread)

Don't bother with the magazines, you'll spend a fortune and you'll eventually find out like the rest of us, that they just recycle the same old crap

:plusone: unless it has something specific for you, a book or perhaps a short course at your college

I jus my had a look at my growing pile of camera mags.. Allthough they're nice to read on trains n planes etc .. I don't really think I've got an awful lot from them.
A lot of space is adverts as you'd expect. Some are useful.

My thoughts would be.. Don't subscribe to one mag, if you see a special feature they your looking to learn about.. Have a read. Theres one mag I think which just specialises in canon.. Helpful not to have to read all the nikon reviews asWell.

For me.. Mags are a nice read but forums n websites or first hand is where the good info is at

I've just got a subscription to Practical Photography and it's good. It's worth looking online for offers and cashback.

Browse through them and pick it up if there's something that interests you (projects/tips etc) but 99% of people on here are more than willing to help

I can second practical photography for the skills bootcamp which has just this month if you're starting from a really basic level like me! Otherwise I've got what digital camera a few times if I'm looking at making a new purchase. I personally find all the lens listings in the back useful when considering a new lens as there are more than I ever imagined!

I too have signed up for the bootcamp and 6 issues for a tenner. Cant really go wrong with that

I wouldn't bother with magazines but I'd check out sites that offer great explanations... I know a site due to open really soon which I've heard good things about - www.dslrcollege.com

Just have a google around, another good on is the envato site - http://photo.tutsplus.com/

And ofcourse you will learn lots from this forum.

I disagree with the above posts...

I myself bought a few titles for my first two months when I was getting into photography and buying my first DSLR, and they were immensely helpful.

My first lessons on Aperture/ISO/SS etc came from those magazines, as well as basic tips on portraits, landscapes etc...

Of course if you already know a good deal about photography, they will sound very repetitive and useless, but for some one coming from P&S, they were very helpful...for 3-4 months that is....:D....then even for me, they started getting repetitive...

What I did in the first month was buy 4-5 titles, and then stuck with one or two titles that I liked ever since.

I recommend Practical Photography(monthly), and Amateur Photography(weekly)....

Howe ever, to be perfectly honest, these days I just flick through them at WH SMITH...;)

British Journal of Photography from what I hear is superb, but for pros I suppose...

I buy the occasional photo mag,but find that they all tend to be much the same. Better off going on the web for info and of course on this forum where you can get good advice.

As a big reader I like the odd magazine as an alternative to a book. I recently read a few copies of Outdoor Photographer, less how to's and plenty of location guides, very impressed.

I think a mag can be quite helpful especially to a beginner, they can have the right amount of in camera help, PP help, adverts & readers letters.. and they all have some decent offers on lately so not too expensive..

PhotoPlus is Canon specific so you know all the in camera help is going to relate to you, although I feel they have too much Photoshop tutorials..

I personally read Practical Photography, there DSLR skills are useful and I always take up the 6 issues for a £tenner offer so it doesnt cost too much, I like the small pocketable supplements you get aswell.
