Any reason to not go for Elinchrom BRX

I am starting to dip my toe into getting my own setup. I have been reading up and although some limited info out there, I am really taken with the Elinchrom BRX. I am looking at the 250 heads as a start, as not having my own studio yet means I am not desperate for the power, so am thinking 250 heads first then follow with bigger heads as needed if I get my own studio.

Anyone had experience with these heads? Good? Bad?

I am also looking to add a power pack to these such as the Paul C Buff one for location work. If that could be a factor.

Advice as always is greatly appreciated.

Great lights. My only criticism of them is that they are over complicated for 99 per cent of users, and it's very easy to let a finger dally on a pad for a microsecond too long and change a setting behind the main settings without realising it. However, You won't regret it in terms of performance in terms of recycle times and flash consistency.

For a lot less money you get pretty much the same performance from Lencarta Elite Pro heads which you will find a lot simpler to use, although they won't win prizes in the design stakes. A bonus with them is that modifiers are far cheaper.

If you want to get techy, and play about with pc and phone control, then Elinchrom is the way to go. If you simply want something that will produce flash consistently and quickly, save several quid and look at Lencarta.

Far from over complicated if you read the manual. But as said, Elinchrom mount modifiers don't come cheap. So do a research on what modifiers you would like to try and calculate that into the price as well. :)

Worth noting that even Lencarta also sell their modifiers in elinchrom fit, as so Bessel, calumet and a whole hoarde of eBay sellers, so not really a huge issue any more. That said, the rotalux softboxes are fantastic and a real reason TO choose elinchrom

Elinchrom BXR-250 is probably my favourite studio head. Plenty of power for home studio, high spec, built-in SkyPort sync, light weight, and with the significant advantage of a much shorter flash duration than anything else around that price.

As mentioned above, plenty of modifiers around apart from Elinchrom's own. I have a couple of Lencarta ProFolders with their interchangeable mounts, which are very good. Bessel, Calumet, Interfit, StroBeam, amongst others.

Personally I sold all my Elinchrom kit and converted to Lencarta.

Whist the BXRi kit looks good, 4 out of my 7 heads developed faults in the first year.

Unusual..? Possibly, and perhaps not a good test bed as they were used at events, so out on the road two or three times a week.

What I really annoyed me was the cheap plastic casing. If you pick up a head whilst it's on and hold it in the wrong way, the plastic flexes so much that it interferes with the fan. Not what I expect in this sort of product.

By way of clarity I must point out that I now have an association with Lencarta, but my experience with the BXRi heads is nonetheless valid.

I use elinchrom style rx heads. Toich wood, never missed a beat. Never had to change a fuse or even a modelling lamp. Very short flash durations. Until I can afford rotalux boxes I am using bessel which are decent for the money.

Fair play Jeremy, and credit to Lencarta.

I've used various Elinchrom heads over the years, mostly the cheaper models, never had a problem. But I don't throw them around either :)

Has anyone used them with Power packs at all? Not sure if I will, but handy in case I decide to. If that is ok think my mind is made up

I've used Elinchroms with Innovatronix battery power packs if that's what you mean. Used them with Lencartas too. Both work fine, as do almost all studio heads, though not as good as a pukka portable system.

Yeah that's what I meant.

Cheers for that. Looks like I know what to ask Santa for.
