Hi there,

Really getting into photography now and want to shadow a pro photographer for a couple of days, i am happy to be your assistant for free and help you with anything. All i ask for in return is let me watch you work.

I live in south london and dont mind travelling, but london would be perfect.

I will not disrupt any shoots, i just want to be there to watch and learn.

Please pm me.

Thanks people.
:p

That's a great attitude. Don't be too disappointed if people aren't queueing up to take up your offer straight away. A lot of pros just wont have time to answer a lot of the questions people want to ask in this situation. It can be quite disruptive to a shoot and while they're telling you how to set something up, they can have it done.

Good luck though - hope you find someone. :)

Offer not to ask questions while hes working just watch, then agree to ask questions when hes finished perhaps?

^ Thanks mate!

I have the attitude if you dont ask you dont get, so anything i that comes from this post and forum is a bonus. :)

Might be worth asking around a few studios as well, esp. ones that do product shots, plenty of those in London.

Apart from there being a bit more time to talk during set up you'll also learn a lot about lighting technique. The first lab I worked in had a studio as well and I spent every spare minute in there watching the tog set up and shoot pack shots of anything and everything, he was a great bloke that saw how much I wanted to learn and put the effort in to explain it all

M3 (sorry - don't know your real name!) -

I'm not remotely local to you (I'm in Denver, Colorado) but it looks like I'll be returning to London some time in the next two or three months for some portrait sessions there. I work entirely on location with available light and B&W film, and am primarily commissioned for child and family sessions.

I'm generally hesitant to bring assistants along on shoots because it's well outside of the way I work; however, if anyone on the board wants to volunteer to be a "victim" (or volunteer your kids) I'd be happy to do a demonstration shoot with no money involved. I really enjoy helping out new photogs, but it's too much of a risk on overseas sessions and high-dollar clients. ;)

If you're interested, drop me a note and I'll let you know when I'll be there.

Nice offer CJ.

I've been fortunate to follow a couple of professional photographers on various shoots and yes, its a question of mucking in and mentally making notes until a break in proceedings lets you ask why? how? and so on.
