Hi,
I am after a rough cost for a plumber to replace the syphon in a toilet cistern. It is not a close coupled toilet and the pipe from the cistern to the pan is easily accesible and the supply has an isolating valve. It is a front lever operated flush and I want the new syphon to be dual flush.
I would like an idea of the total cost for the job so that if the first plumber I contact can do the job quickly I will not have to get more quotes before giving him the job.
I am in Greater London, if that makes a difference.
Thanks in advance
Kev

Not sure how "handy" you are, but I just recently fitted a close coupled partially built in toilet cistern,
syphon and water feed / ballcock riser,
took me an hour, parts bought from screw fix £15.

That will be even easier. look on you tube loads of tutorials.

I could do it myself, I have installed heating systems in the past and recently installed a shower, but at present my right arm doesn't like moving.

Easiest way would be probably a
Fluidmaster Lever Dual Flush Valve.....
Probably at least £90-110..... if you find somebody really local.

Could you take a photo of the inside of the cistern and post it on here. It's a possibility I could tell you the make of the part you need and how to fit it.

Edit, sorry, just read above.

As mentioned, a fluid master with lever would hopefully do the trick PRO750UK. Not sure on price, especially around greater London.

No idea on price but you might find this government backed website of help to find pro help that meets tradind standards conditions

https://www.buywithconfidence.gov.uk

Last time I looked down here in Surrey some tradesmen offer certain jobs at fixed price e.g. £75

To be honest I would be surprised if you paid any more than £70-£80 to supply and fit

I'd agree with Box - probably about £75. Possibly more in Greater London- unless you find a Polish plumber :) It's hardly worth getting in the van and picking up the parts and then doing the job for that price, to be honest.
It's one of those jobs that might take half an hour on the job if everything goes right, if not, it could be an hour and a half.
edit: It would cost the same in Edinburgh, but other parts of the country would be considerably cheaper.
A lot of the plumbers I know charge a call out fee of £90 before they do any work, not including parts.
Handymen tend to be cheaper.

Thanks for the replies. I had 2 plumbers recommended, one said it was out of his area and the other was busy until June!
I looked on the local council check a trader site and also the Institute of Plumbers & Heating Engineers site and found a local plumber who was on both. He quoted £70 and said that he could do it today between 3:00 and 4:00 on his way home from a job.

Book him! Feed him tea and biscuits! Tame plumbers are worth their weight in Gold so keep him sweet, especially if he is very local to you and is happy to call in at short notice when needed.

local is the way to go.
travel costs the most in time nowadays

As plumbers are usually regarded as the enemy, a little aside.
Years ago we had a call at the office, asking for a quote for a wasps nest destruction.
They were given the going rate, and the guy went ballistic!

His wife had apparently found a wasps nest in the garage, and screamed at him, down the phone to sort it.
He was at work and told her to look in yellow pages ( yes it was awhile back :D )
She phoned the first company listed and they told her they were busy, she then apparently started ranting at them to get it done NOW!
"I don't care what it costs" ( not the smartest thing to say was it? )

Of course the company came out, and charged her £300.
The going rate at the time was £35
And she was the wife of a plumber :D

Why not convert it to a dual flush push button, easier to replace your self in the future

All fitted and working OK. Thanks for the replies.

£750 reducing by the mile the further you get from Knightsbridge
