Any Nikkor 105mm AFS micro users?

Hi,
I was wondering if we have anu users here with this lenson FF bodies.
If there are any, I would like to know what are your thougts about this lens
mainly if you use it as a portrait lens (?)

I have this mounted on a Nikon D300 which isn't full frame but is my favourite all time lens. Excellent for Macro shots of Flowers, insects etc but i don't like it for portraits as its a bit long on a DX camera.

Oz Kharawala is a reasonably well known portrait photographer and runs courses for Nikon and uses the VR version mostly at f4 with a D3 and claims not to use any other lens unless he has to.

I sold my 105vr because the focus hunting drove me mad, even on a D3. I even sent it to Nikon to have it checked over and they said it was within tolerances. Quite often it would just completely stop focusing and would need some manual override. This is not an uncommon issue, I believe, and is probably related to the the huge distance range that the focusing mechanism has to cover to function in macro. I replaced it with a 2nd hand 85mm 1.4 and have never regretted it (I am not interested in macro photography.

I think Uncle Ken Rockwell reported a similar problem with the first one he tried but reports that later models seemed to focus better. Perhaps I had a duff one.
