As per the title...

I'd like to be able to play CD's in the kitchen and wondered if anyone has any recommendations for a small portable CD player? I've had a couple of portable CD / Radio type things but they seem to be going out of fashion with fewer being available. I recently bought one for a family member and it was absolute crap and went straight back, terrible sound quality, so rather than pick at random or rely on Amazon reviews I thought I'd ask you lot :D

It doesn't have to stay in the kitchen so I wouldn't worry too much about humidity as I can take it in to listen to it and remove it again later. Also it doesn't have to have a radio as there's a TV in the kitchen and I can listen to the radio through that.

Any pointers would be very welcome :D

You not thought about something like an Amazon Echo. We have them in most rooms great for music.

I can play CD's on it?

Just had a quick google and I'd much prefer something I can play a CD on as usually there isn't a pc on. The plan is to pick up a CD and the player and listen to it in the kitchen whilst washing up, cooking or whatever.

For best sound quality a Meridian F80 - would have to be secondhand

What about a pair of satellite speakers from your main system?

Using the hifi would mean running cables or faffing on with some sort or wireless setup but that would need me to keep popping out of the kitchen to adjust the volume, skip tracks and change CD's or whatever which would disturb other people. It'd be much better to shut the door and keep me and my music in and the world out.

This is the thing I bought and sent back, the sound quality was just awful.

I just wondered if anyone had anything better.

MP3 player, some time and a decent pair of 'phones.

Great suggestion but I'm a bit of a technophobe these days so I have no idea how to get my (hundreds? thousands?) of CD's onto a MP3 player and I've always hated headphones and earphones :D I just want to pick up the player and a CD or two and head off into the kitchen :D

I think I'll just spend an hour on Amazon and buy the portable / transportable CD player with built in speakers that has the best reviews.

Thanks all :D

They don't require a pc. Just connects to the internet and streams music, Amazon have a lot for free, see if the CDs you want to play are available to stream.
We got my mum one for the kitchen and she loves it (76) she just says "Alexa play Abba" and off it goes.

Thanks but I think the best answer for me is the most straightforward and simplest answer... a CD player :D One with built in speakers and that works off the mains. I really can't be faffed with selecting tracks off a screen with soapy fingers or talking to a device that probably wont understand my accent :D

I'll have a look at Amazon and see what gets the best feedback.

Why not get an Amazon Echo or the Google or Apple equivalents? Subscribe to Spotify, Prime Music or Apple Music, then you’ll have all your music and literally tens of millions of other songs?
And no faffing with putting a disc in.

Sorry but faffing about with smartphones or other screen controlled devices or players while washing up and cooking just isn't for me and neither is subscribing to music apps controlled by these devices. And our Virgin supplied internet is unreliable as flip. I'd rather just sing to myself. I'm not bad and at one time was asked to be the singer in a band :D I could always play the spoons too :D

I do have a smartphone but it's turned off 99% of the time and my pc might be turned on but will be in another room.

I've spotted a couple of portable Sony CD players that might just make the shortlist.

Just had a chat with someone who has an Amazon thingy. Got a mini review... He says for what I'd want and the sound quality I'd expect don't do it as they're sh!t :D Just his opinion :D

Good luck to those who use and love them but I think I'll find a nice old tech CD player with remote control. That'll do nicely :D

Maybe a Bose Wave cd/radio player?
I’ve never owned one myself but a friend had one and it sounded decent and was pretty loud.
They seem to go for between £50 and £150 on eBay.

Ps

stick to your guns streaming is sh1t

but that’s another argument

Depending on budget then the Ruark R3 would be worth looking at.....

love it, can you recommend me a CD player, no but i can suggest every other conceivable way to play music other than from a CD!

im guessing the budget doesnt stretch to a Denon DM or similar with budget bookshelf speakers. The DM31 or an Arcam solo mini would be used, DM41 new. Panasonic do a similar thing with speakers for under £300

My old Bose wave needed replacement and I settled on a Ruark R3, it’s similar to the Bose but better sounding, more functional and looks good too :)

That's probably the best idea. You're basically buying speakers in a box with a laser thingummy. At most sensible prices the laser bit will be the same - you're buying a box you like the look of with speakers that sound adequate (kitchens are not the place for audiophiles).

I'd choose something from a brand you know with the features you want.

Echoes have their place (and I like the one I have in the kitchen) but not if you have 100s of CDs.

I'll bet this is great - but I've never tried one.

Sony ZS-PS55B CD Boombox with DAB and FM Radio - Black: Amazon.co.uk: Audio & HiFi

They're OK but not great. We've got one on top of the microwave which serves the kitchen but is very rarely used and even more rarely a a CD player - Radio 6 Music.

We have a Panasonic Mini HiFi system in the kitchen, it spends most of its life tuned into Classic FM but does occasionally play CDs. It fits into a custom made (by me) wall unit in between a pair of wall cabinets.

We gave my Dad a Pure Chronos CD radio which is quite compact and has a decent sound .........
