My son had an iPod Touch (3rd gen?) which was working but he sold to his friend so he could buy the new model. When the new iPod was connected to my Vista PC it was detected in iTunes, but the Sync button was greyed out.
I updated iTunes (was not too out of date), but made no difference. Followed the iTunes uninstall instructions at Apple and reinstalled iTunes with no difference.
I installed iTunes on an old XP laptop which had never had iTunes on it and when connected it said that the iPod was synced to another computer and did I want to sync to this library so I did. The Sync button was not greyed out on the laptop. So I think this proves it's not a faulty iPod.
Again uninstalled iTunes on the main computer, but using Revo Uninstaller this time to remove leftover registry entries, reinstalled iTunes. Noted that when the iPod was connected it did not say that it had been synced to another computer and the Sync button is still greyed out.
Any suggestions - other than reinstall Windows, get Windows 7, buy a Mac, thanks!

is it actually doing something though? if you look at where the song information is normally displayed when playing music, is there activity there? the sync button greys out when it is syncing so it may be trying to initiate its sync.

uncheck the "Manually Manage Music and Videos" option if its checked. also have you tryed restoring the ipod? is that option available? do the touch run ios5?

Do you mean the iPod or iTunes? Neither appear to be doing anything.

I think I tried that among everything else but will have another look.

Yes, did a restore.

do the touch run ios5?

I think so, looking at the web.

Thanks.

Son has transferred his itunes library onto the laptop now, so I dare not connect his iPod to the other computer in case it messes his iPod up! So I fear I won't be able to get to the root of the problem, which will annoy me!

It's doing this because it knows you're not 100% aligned to "The Apple Way". Stop uninstalling iTunes, chill for a couple of days, wear a polo neck sweater and have a cappuccino (or is it a Tall Skinny Latte these days???). The greyed out button WILL return once your karma is equalled out.... ;) :D

 You're probably right - I'm not an Apple fan!

It could be because the device is already synch'd to too many PCs. I think iTunes allows 3? If so, you can de-register it with a specific PC to allow you to then synch with the one you want.

It has to be the manually manage music thing, I can't see what else it could be.

Are you sure you want to sync it though? I manually drag and drop my music to the iPod.

Also, have you tried dragging and dropping in iTunes?

It is new and had only been connected to the one PC!

I think my son did try that. I thought the 'beauty' of iTunes was that you didn't have to drag and drop?

It worked no problem with the XP laptop, so I suspect something is conflicting with iTunes on the Vista PC.
