looks like it left the nest a bit early- eating the fat balls and I've given him some water. Now sitting on the ground- don't want the cats to get it!

Generally agreed. Although when you add in cats ,which are hardly 'natural' (as in brought in by 'man'), then I can forgive a bit of assistance to fledglings in avoiding those.Don't interfere, hard as it is. Nature takes it's own course.
