They are appearing in roadside verges over here in south-west France along with pyramidal orchids. The early purple orchids have mostly gone over now. I found some albino variants this year.
If anyone is interested in photographing orchids the north-west corner of Cyprus around the Akamas peninsular is a brilliant location for them. When we used to go over regularly we recorded over 20 species. The area is good for migrating birds too.
Agree !
It is common Spotted Orchid mostly found in most of Britain and Ireland.
Common in mainland Europe.
I have seen it growing along roadsides of Slovenia.
I plucked a 'weed' from my garden and it was only when I went to dispose of it that I realised it was an orchid, I was mortified! Fortunately I spotted another one so I flagged it so as to avoid it with the mower. The one I plucked I put in a small vase with some water and to my utter amazement not only did it survive - it thrived for nine days. The two photos show the comparison between the two.
Left in the garden
This really struggled and never got much better than shown here.
Lived in the vase
I am Britain's answer to Agent Orange when it comes to plants so for this one to bloom like this is amazing. There was a small clump of blooms at the bottom of the cluster to start with and over the nine days the buds opened, gradually climbing the up cluster until they were all open, wonderful. Incidentally, the name derives from the spots on the leaves.
