Undecided any holiday booked for 2024 ?

How long is the Italian tour?

Not very long, 3 days in Venice, 3 day Florence, 3 days Rome, and 2 in Naples, I'm only actually going to Naples as it was the only flight I could get back to Luton airport on my timescale, I actually went to Rome last year and loved it, but this time I will be on my own on the whole trip, so plenty of time to hopefully get stuck in to some good photography, I would like to get to Pisa, but I can't find a train that goes there on the days I am in Florence, and the buses are not very frequent, so I shall see. I'm not to interested in Naples, so plan to go down to Pompei for the day, and then the next morning get my flight back to the UK.

The Amalfi coast is on my bucket list, as is the Dolomites, but I'm getting old now, lol, and health isn't what it was in my younger fitter days, so again we shall see. I've never really looked at Italy much before going to Rome, and didn't realise what a beautiful scenic country it is. I'm also looking at Seville in Spain for next year, as again it looks like a really lovely place to visit.

I've now booked a short City break to Amsterdam on the 20th of June for 4 days. Unfortunately a little late for the Tulip season.

We have just booked to go back to Tokyo later this year. We hadn’t done anything since COVID and decided to book and go in March this year and absolutely loved it. The only problem was that there is so much to do and I stupidly tried to cram it all into too short a time. This time we go for longer and have a better idea how to spend our time there.

I not been on a real holiday since 2003, just a couple of 3 or 4 day city breaks.

I find being a single person holidays are just not the same when not sharing the experience, and bloody expensive for one person.

Got a few days booked in a premier inn by the new forest in a month or two...planning some deer and horse phunting.

I'm off to Venice for a week in the morning. :)

The last planned trip in April to Lisbon was cancelled the day before because of a family emergency, so fingers crossed this goes as planned. :)
A lovely city with lots to see, photograph and enjoy.

Bon voyage. I have booked to go to Venice later in the year, after a previous trip was cancelled in similar circumstances.

Thank you. :)

This will be the ninth visit, but I am hoping to get out to some of the surrounding towns, Bologna, Padua, Treviso, Verona or Vicenza. I definitely want to get to try Tiramisu in the place it originated, Treviso. ;)

We have been twice but the last time was done years back.

Across the two stays ~ I recall our trip to Murano and seeing the glass makers working (viewed through an open door into the workshop), climbing the Campanile on the island seen from St Marks (can't recall it's name) and the bells chimng whilst up there...... deafening does not do it justice!

The Jewish ghetto quarter was the most empty and apparently least visited area.

We must go back at least once more?

PS IIRC we spotted a Gondala repair/workshop on a canal walk but could not see or orientate myself as to whether I could walk around to it and see if it could be visited or not?

Oh, the Arsenal as recall was worth the visit.

Almost anywhere away from around the rail station/entrance to the city, Rialto Bridge or St Mark's Square, and the routes between them, is pretty quiet. ;) :)

As far as I know, if it is the same one at Squero di San Trovaso, I don't think you can visit, as it is a working boat yard. A lot of people stop to eat and drink in front of the view of the yard. There is another one, Tramontin & Figli, which is a bit more hidden away and can be seen from the Fondamenta Orgnasanti, and again, I think no access, as it is a working boatyard.

One the the places in Murano does/did a display of the glass blowing, every hour or so, and to see someone create the Ferrari prancing horse right in front of you is an amazing thing to see.

Well I've been back from Venice for a few hours. :) I was as long waiting for the coach from Manchester as the flight back. It's been a very long day so far.

It was 30-37 degrees whilst I was there. :$ Took loads of pics, but haven't looked at any of them yet. I was enjoying taking the pics, I didn't want the possible reality of the potentially bad pics spoiling the trip. ;)

There seemed to be lot less tourists than I would have expected at this time of year, maybe a quarter to a third less than at a similar time a couple of years ago.

Exactly my way. Take loads of pictures that are perfect in your head - reality often leads to my disappointment! Noticed recently that I have a problem with over exposing badly parts of the picture and that annoyed me.

Just booked a holiday for 2024; a cottage near the Dorset coast. Should be a few things to photograph but I have done the Jurassic coast previously.

When I am in difficult lighting situations, like going down alleyways with potentially dark shadows and bright light hitting walls, or a bit of sky, I do a bracketed burst of either 3 or 5 images a stop apart. Generally nothing is moving, but the main aim is to not overexpose. I could take my time and spot measure etc, but if the time when there is no one in the alley is probably very brief, I'll take the burst and choose the best one later.

All about thinking time eh?

An advantage of mirrorless is that you can see what the sensor is going to record. I can therefore point my spot-metering area over the brightest part of the scene to ebsure it's not blown, then recover shadows in post. Not as good as using a 3-shot HDR recovery, but much quicker when you're not alone.

I have no excuses. I also have mirrorless and know I have options it just seems to be a phase I'm going through. It'll be something else next week.

Forgive me, what is 3-shot HRD recovery? I'm guessing exposure bracketing?

We did Rome in February
Shetlands and Fjords in May
Athens, turkey and some Greek islands in june
Isle of Man in july
And now not really anywhere till Dominican Republic in November.

So, clearly we’re mostly at home this year

Camera dilemma coming up.

Vienna in Sept - went last year solo, this time with GF. Did plenty of the sights last year so tempted to make do with the X100V.

Cyprus to see family in Oct and stopping in Rome for 2 days. Last went 20+ years ago so more tempted to take XT3 with me and my lovely 16mm. Not sure the 56mm would get much use though?

I'd look for something in the 35-50mm equivalent range, however a 24-120 equivalent would be better still for walkabouts

I agree, for city photography I find the 16-80mm range (24-120mm FF equivalent) perfect for almost all pics. It all depends on what type of pics you though, but for most people, that range would work. I find the wider end most used.

When I go away I take the lens above, plus 10-20mm and 70-300mm lenses, but on my recent trip neither came out of the bag. And that has happened on a few trips in the past. I take them 'just in case' because the pictures is the main focus of the trip.

When I 'travel' to exotic places then I take the Sony 24-105 + a fast lens (used to be 55 f1.8, but I don't have anything light & small now). Depending, I'd also take a pancake 35 f2.8, an 18mm f2.8 (both very light) or a 12-24.

For going to another UK place or France I'm finding more and more the only lens I use is my Sony 50 f1.2 and everything else stays in the bag.

I just find the 16-55 too cumbersome for walking around - hence the primes

I like primes (see above) but would find a 24 or 80 equivalent to be too restrictive, and would prefer a mid-range prime *for that purpose*.

I'm impressed by what a well travelled bunch TP members are.
I was fortunate to go to Las Vegas in Nov '19. Hadn't been away again untill last December when I went to Lanzarote for some winter sun which was great.
This December I'm off to Malta. Just booked it and very much looking forward to it.

I booked through love holidays. If you take your time and check you have added all the bits you want when you first book then they can find some keen prices.
As I found last year making any change at all after the original booking is very expensive.

we came back from Portugal last week and went on the River Douro into Spain. Biggest surprise was just going on the coach into Spain with no border checks, coolest was 32c and hottest 43c
Part of the river trip but bits may not be in the right order down to the editing suite mis sorting them

We have been to Malta the last two Decembers. Weather tends to be okay but not blistering.

No idea where you are going but lots of photo opportunities all over but I especially enjoyed Gozo. We got a 7 day bus pass and just travel around the island.

This year have done Madeira (Stunning, amazing place and such a shame about the recent fires), Tenerife for a week earlier in the and then just back from a month in Tenerife. The month in Tenerife was about 95% blue skies so not great photography wise but got some astro stuff done.

Here's one.
