i would like to do potraits.baby photography.my better half is about to give birth in the next few days with our first and i would be nice to get really good pics of her

I'd not bother about a college course - google for all the information you need

Strobist 101 and (especially) 102 are great wee online courses that will give you some great info on lighting for portraiture (and other stuff). Assuming you know the very basics of how to work a camera - how shutter speed, aperture, ISO, focal length can be used creatively.

Other than that the University of Google is your friend. Read widely and closely, be prepared to experiment and offer your work for criticism and you shouldn't need a teacher.

In the information age there's very little need to pay for tuition for the basics as long as you have some patience and confidence in your ability to learn.
You can learn the technical stuff from private study and the creative side...well, creativity isn't something that can be taught very well.

That all said, I am very much an amateur so disregard this opinion at your leisure.

thanks for that.i will have a wee read.any advice is good advice in my opinion.i have all these ideas in my head of things i want to try when my baby arrives so will be trial and error.just thought i would try and get the general opinion on courses.to see if they would be worth while i guess.im still playing about with all the settings but i get the general jist of how it all works.be watching loads on youtube and read abit on here.so trying to take it all in
