Any disadvantages to "high" platen gap?

OK, so this is a bit out of left field, but I've had to increase the platen gap to avoid head strikes on my printer. It's worked like a charm, but I wondered if there were any disadvantages to it?

Some thing is obviously out of specification.
However if it still makes high quality prints, why should you worry.
It would undoubtedly cost a fair bit to be professionly repaired and adjusted.
If it still keeps register over the paper Area I would not worry unless it develops other problems.

The paper is quite thick which was the problem. It also had a very slight curl to it. Almost all my test prints were getting head strikes on anything over about 320gsm, so I just went into the print options and raised the platen gap. Well - changed it from Auto to "Wider" which is the widest setting.

I use an Epson Pro3800 and 320g paper, and usually need to open the platen gap to wide or widest. I have noticed no effect upon the print quality.

Note that the Epson printer reverts to the default of the normal platen gap when you switch the printer off.
