Hi

Am trying to find a better way of skin softening on portraits with cs3, all the ones I have found go WAY WAY over the top & create a very unnatural result.:nono:

How is the best way that you have all found?

i know it's not a tutorial - but portrait professional is a good software program.

There are many techniques for Portrait retouching but some of them are to be avoided if your goal is to get the most natural look possible .

Guy Gowan has some interesting techniques to get natural results:

I have this DVD and it's quite easy to follow. Each step is well explained and you don't need to be a Photoshop guru to understand these steps.

Excuse my naive question, as I've never used Photoshop (other than Lightroom), but does Guy Gowan teach his techniques to work on Photoshop or is it another application altogether?

Photoshop, he is good though. He has revolutionised the way I treat an image and it's colours.

Thanks Tom

I guess there's so much more, yet, for me to learn ; he sure does make it sound really simple, are his techniques really that good (worth getting the DVDs)?

I also have the Guy Gowan DVD and it is well worth the money.

I would opt for the Guy Gowan DVD, I have tried both. The DVD explains what is happening and when you put it to use, you will have FULL control over what is happening.

Also, you will learn more about photoshop along the way.

i just use lightroom

go into develop, click on adjustment brush and drop the clarity slider down a little and go over the areas required.....

gives me results like this:

smooths enough to get rid of any orange peel like skin
but not to strong as to look un-natural :D

The clarity slider is in ACR too, just not quite up to it for large print close ups.

Excellent link Danny,; thanks for posting that :)
