Any Canon known issues?

Hi,

I'm thinking of getting a Canon 400D for my first 'proper' camera and have noticed a few instances of the 300D/350D/400D cameras having problems with the fuse on the circuit board etc... is this a common problem or have I only taken notice of these because I'm looking specifically at these models... or is it just a case of there being such a high volume of these around, you're bound to hear of a few problems?
In a nutshell I guess I'm just asking if there are any known issues with the reliability of these (particularly the 400D).... I usually have a habit of buying first and asking later, so thought I'd try a different approach this time :D

I used a 400D for a couple of years and found NO issues whatsoever though I did only a few thousand "clicks" less than ten IIRC.

Before moving onto a 40D ( sorry to throw something else into your equation) which I found to be "nicer" if your buget allows I would also take a serious look at that as well.

It sounds like you already have the answer to your question:

Check every 'tog forum and you'll find plenty who speak highly of the 400D. You'll also find those who've started with a 400D and upgraded. You'll also find some who'd rather let their budget rule their judgement and who prefer to look down on this little cracker from a position of "yes but..".

If you're worried about the occasional battery failure, your comment about there being plenty of them about is germane: buy one from a dealer with the associated back-up - there's no need to go hunting around the private sale market.

had one for 18months to 2 years never had an error with it! i did over 11K actuations and its still going strong with a friend of mine.

Have you actually held a 400D?

Nikon, Sony, Pentax and othrs all make "proper" cameras too.

Go and play with a variety of bodies in shops and see which feel right for you.

 Very reassuring thanks

Hmmmmmm you've got my juices flowing now.... just been having a butchers and wondering if it'd be more sensible to get one of these  I've noticed there's a lot of upgrading going on around here and I'm now pondering whether to convince myself to cut out the middle-man and save a few 'long-term' quids..... you've gone and done it now..... :bonk:

I've managed to have a grope of a 400D and like the cut of it's jib, I'm presuming the 40D is pretty much similar

The 40D body is quite a bit bigger than the 400D

It feels more solid, and the digic III processor ( of the 40D) is far superiour IMHO
A lot of people have "upgraded" from the 400D to the 40D.
So yes if you can afford it I would most certainly cut out the middle man as you put it

Thanks Cobra,
I had a good long thought about it and decided to edge on the side of caution at the moment and am currently awaiting delivery of a 400D purchased from a forum member. I've had a good look at the results that people are getting from the 400D with a few decent lenses (and even the kit lens) and decided that if I could learn to get results like that I'd be more than happy with it. I guess there'll, hopefully, come a time when I've 'outgrown' it and will want a new camera to play with but being a new boy to the scene I'm sure that the 400D will be a good introduction to the world or 'proper' photography :D. And.... it means I'll have more to spend on the extras

I am sure you won't be dissapointed with the 400D, I wasn't!
They are still a very popular camera, producing very good results
and who knows by the time you are thinking of an upgrade
there will probabley be an "even better" model out
