Used to have a 400d, had a great time with it and it's a cracking start
would 2nd the nifty fifty, also a decent zoom and you have a set up that would last for a good while
I think I had mine for 3 yrs before upgrading to the 50d

i use a 400d as a backup body, the only problem i have found is it tends to underexpose by anything upto 1 stop so i just set the exposure comp to +1

thanks chris she is looking that up in the book, i got it second hand from parkcameras with a new lens and it came with a spare battery and a cable release, has giottos screen protector on it aswell but no software disc:( can she download the specific software from the canon site?

can you recomend any zoom lenses to look out for in the for sale section or ebay or even new?

Keep your eye open in the classified section on here - there are often good lenses to be had :)

have had a look but dont what ones to go for, do they have to have an auto focus motor built in to the lens or does the camera have built in motor:shrug:

and do i go for a canon lens or sigma, tamron?

Canon lenses all have the AF motor in the lens itself - there are no other options. :)

Have a look at the EF-S 17-55 IS - it's a good lens and not that badly priced either

Mine tends to overexpose by 1 stop so thats wierd othersise its a great camera and I am well pleased with mine,as for lenses unless low light shooting is essential I'd go for a tele zoom rather than a 50mm

I've had my 400d for 3 years, along with a sigma 18mm-200mm DC lens, recently added a canon 50mm 1.8f and the combo works very well.

Tamron 17-50 f2.8 is a great lens, I had one on my 400D and it gave excellent results.
