At the moment in our area we have a glut of fake £20 notes, these are reputed to be very difficult to spot, since retiring we have gone back to cash for weekly living, drawing x amount out of the cash machine to spend each week.

What are the chances of cash machines paying out these very good fakes?

Should be nil.

SHOULD be nil but probably aren't in reality. In the same way that Mrs Nod shouldn't have had an old £1 coin in a bag of change last month (from the bank). If you're really worried, get your cash over the counter (if possible - not everywhere still has branches) and ask them to check every note for you - or get it in tenners (which we're told are harder to forge.)

Chances = nil. Cash that goes into atm's is packed and scanned by machine, fake notes won't have the UV markers. Buy yourself a UV torch or two and if given a £20 note in change check it yourself. The UV marker on bank notes is very easy to spot under UV light.

Will probably go back to using debit cards but we quiet liked going back to cash

Quote from the local paper
"The worrying thing is, these fake notes have become very good, and in some cases they are almost impossible to notice, unless you know the right way to check them.

"The notes have the watermarks to say that they are real and are made out of very similar paper to what real notes use. They are also covered in a wax layer, which means that our counterfeit markers are not able to pick up on them at all.

"The only way to see if they are fake is to rub your finger over a certain area and if it feels rough then the note is real but if it feels smooth, it is fake.

What certain area they could at least say.:D

The words Bank of England by the Queen's head are raised. The easiest way for me to feel it is to run my fingernail over the words

Also, £20s are going polymer next year I think, harder to fake.

Virtually never use cash these days keep a odd few quid for car parking .

If you have a local shop you could ask for a cashback on your debit card and get it in £10 notes
