As a dad myself, and a teacher, I know it's improper to comment on children's toys ... BUT, what IS he holding in his hand ?

hahahah.

I like this shot - a nice take.

Looking forward to seeing more - cheers.

I think it might be his last ditch attempt to save his marriage! I fear for him however as it seems the butch cowboy guy from next door has moved in already..

christ in comparison to the toy if I had one that size I would be in the circus :D

Good first pic of the year

really struggling with the 52 :( determined to do it though....i'll get a decent shot in yet!

Real shame you've not had many comments Paul, sorry about that.

My thoughts.. Shot 1, not my cup of tea, but nicely done. Front figure maybe a bit dark?

Shot 2 and 3, love them. In 2, the catchlights are beautiful. Wonder if 1.8 is too much? One eye is lovely and sharp and the other is out of focus. Might work better with both eyes in focus?

Shot 3. Brilliant. Works perfectly in B&W. Could've done with the mirror wiping a little more as your.. which is it.. left eye is a bit obscured by the mist.

All in all, nicely done.

thanks Simon, for number 3 I did REALLY want the mirror mega steamed up with just a little bit wiped for my face but couldn't manage to get it that steamed up!

thanks for the input

Paul,

No. 1. I like it, nicely shot, good DOF.
No.2. Agree with Simon re the OOF eye, but the composition and colours are excellent
No.3. I like the B&W and I think the lighting is good considering you are in a bathroom with shiny surfaces and a mirror. I personally would have physically removed or cloned out the toothbrush and toothpaste that encroach into the frame at the bottom.

I think it is a good start to your 52!

Hi Paul
-I really like your week 1, it's nicely composed and lit. It also fits the theme nicely.
With week 2 I think that the DOF is just a little too shallow for my tastes, but I guess that you were just going for the dummy as the main focal point, which you succeeded at. -I agree with the other guys that if you have one eye in focus then you really need both to be, or you could have got away with just the dummy in focus and neither eye if you had shot from a lower angle?
-Week 3 is a good shot, particularly if you had the camera firing on timer. I see what Ray is saying about the toothbrush, but at the same time it gives the location of the shot a bit of context (i.e. it's in a bathroom).

Good luck with next week.

thanks tim, the bathroom shot was indeed done using a timer, as my remote release has gone weird and only has a range of about 1ft!

will bear the eyes comment in mind for next time, got into the bad habit of shooting at the widest aperture available :)

Ha, I do that a lot with my 50mm 1.8 and my 50-135 2.8. For no reason other than I can. I keep having to give myself a little slap, switch to manual, and think about the effect I want more.

Paul,

I like #1, mainly because I had the same idea. You've managed to keep the background nice and whitethough - I'm still playing with lighting.

#2 is a nice shot, but as has been said, the OOF eye is an issue.

#3 is an excellent take on the theme, but I also find the toothbrush and paste distracting

Big fan of week 2, great colour and dof - plus her eyes are adorable.

This weeks pic is very creative. I like the second edit much better, the perspective is cool but I'd personally prefer the mirror to be toward the left more, promoting your back and giving that kind of 'looking over your shoulder' feel to the picture.

Keep at it though, it'll be worth it.

great shot Paul :)

I also liked the toothbrush in the shot - it made it a bit less 'clean' if you know what I mean!!! LOL!

I also really like the composition & processing, and I'm looking forward to seeing more of whats to come (and at least you've managed to get your 'style' in - I'm still dithering about what to do!!! :)

#1, great perspective and colours, they really look like they are communicating with me..:cuckoo:

#2, lovely photograph and great colours, just the oof right eye doesn't sit right for me.

#3, beards and style, isn't that an oxymoron? B&W works a treat, can't decide whether a bit off the left would improve or not.

Cheers.

Hi Paul,

Well done on sticking with it so far. I struggled at times last year, and I don't have night shifts and two little ones to deal with :)

Week 1 : Nothing much wrong with that. Nice, clean shot, well focused and it made me smile.
:shake: I don't know what this dirty lot were thinking . . . it's obviously a french stick

Week 2 : Agree with what the others have said on DoF, but even with that it really is a beautiful portrait.
Very nicely composed to make use of all the room in the frame and you've absolutely nailed the focus point on her eye. She has such beautiful eyes too - absolutely gorgeous colour and depth to them. You must be a very proud dad.

Week 3 :  superb. My favourite of the 3.
I have a lot of admiration for anyone who can take a SP well and you've done brilliantly with this.
Must have been quite tricky to set up, but you've composed it well and got the focus in just the right place. Mono conversion suits it perfectly and my only niggle would have been the toothbrush and paste in the first one which you've already dealt with.

Hi Paul,

Sorry I have missed your threads, but I'm here now :)

Week 1: I like the composition, colours and the DOF. Had to chuckle at some of the comments, what are some people like  I think it has a bit of a Hansel & Gretel appeal to it.

Week 2: I love this image and such a cutie too. Have to agree with comments about the eyes, although I quite like the softness it adds to the gentleness of the image.

Week 3: This is brilliant, and prefer the edited version. Also liking the b&w conversion. Well done on the execution of this.

Overall a great start to your 52 and I look forward to seeing your week 4.

Cheers

Dawn :)

Paul

No3 is a peach of a shot, tried something similar before and gave it as a bad job.
Not an expert in any way, shape or form, but this a winner for me.

Can't think of anything original :( Sorry  :agree:

wow!! all I can say is thanks for the comments!....and it's all been taken on-board!

after I posted my week 2 image, 10 days went by before anyone commented, which really knocked my confidence, but since then.....!!!!wow!!. many thanks to everyone, and I WILL TRY to leave feedback on everyone elses threads....

...I feel kind of humbled....:thankyou:

Yeah good shot man  that must have been quite difficult to set up. Look forward to seeing your next one...

Hi ya,sorry it's taken me sooo long to comment on your 52 ,there's so many to go through !

I love the shot of your little'un ,her eye's are stunning .Works for me with just the 1 eye in focus & lovely colors framing her face

Self portraits baffle me & have huge admiration for those that can do them . I struggle to get a shot in focu when I'm behind the lens so your shot is just brilliant. Prefer the shot without the toothbrush .
Top job & look forward to seeing your next 49 !

I'd never have the self confidence to do a self portrait... Although my hand may be in this weeks open theme... So well done on that! I'd be a clutz and fall into the sink or trip etc.

I love the shot... But does it shout style when I look at it... I'm not soooo sure... I guess it's in the eye and brain of the viewer

Hi Paul, a very good set for your 52, well done with your self portrait too. Im one of those people who loves taking pictures and portraits if I get the chance, but as soon as the camera is pointed at me, I go hiding...

I really should spend more time commenting on the effort people are putting into their shots. I know I'm having a hell of a time with getting photos done myself!

I love the first shot. It's a nice innocent take on the accommodation theme :)

I've never been into photography for children/babies (despite applying for a job as a child photographer years ago. What was I thinking?!), but I love the colour on the shot and the catch light in the eyes. I'm never sure about the whole DOF issue in these shots. I personally really like shallow DOF as it gives a dreamy quality for the image. In this case I think you've just about pulled it off as it's as if the kid is peaking out of it's safety zone, so a thumbs up from me :)

You mirror shot I like. I can see two different ways of looking at the possible edit with the brush, etc. I like your removal of the items, although I think a tighter crop may work now they're gone. The other option for me would have been to add more items into the holder, for a more hectic feel to a morning getting ready for work feel.

I know what you mean about the steam though. That room with a lot of steam would work really well with that mirror. I suppose a way around the problem could be to take a shot of something when it is steaming up and cheat using layers to add it. I'm not sure how well this would work though, as I'm a bit of a nub when it comes to layering things :(

Still, good work so far :)

Oh and I like your tattoo, I bet that cost you a pretty penny!

I like all your shots so far.
Week 2 the oof eye does not bother me in the slightest.....it's your shot!

(As for the lack of comments......there are so many threads to follow this year....I don't expect everyone to comment on my thread....I am doing the 52 for my own satisfaction and comment on others only when I have time.....)

Nice idea and execution for week 3 too....

Week 4: Open....minded? or not...

bit of fun this week (and yes, maybe pushed the limits of the theme a bit):)

04-1.jpg

Full manual, 1/100 @ f8 with off camera flash, nifty fifty with extension tube and tripod.

Hi Paul,

That lovely look on you're little girls face is certainly going to change when she sees what you have done to her toys

certainly a different take on the theme, not really one for me though if I'm honest.

sorry

Simon.
