Another vote for independence. It could get messy.

Looks like the separatist coalition in Catalunya is going to win today's vote for independence. Legally impossible for them to secede says the Spanish government and they have already said that they will send the army in if they need to. It's going to be very interesting in that part of Europe. Some of the same questions we saw asked over the Scottish situation will need to be addressed. Could an independent Catalunya join the EU. Could the Euro be their currency. Will Barça be allowed to participate the la primera of la liga española?

This is Franco's legacy/mess. There will not/cannot be an easy solution.

They've been getting almost word for word the same project fear horseradish we got last year. You'll be chucked out of the EU, your pensions will vanish, you'll have no banks, no currency, there will be border patrols etc. etc. The independence movement there is very strong, seeing pictures of some of the marches and parades the numbers are phenomenal.

They'll all vote no once they realise Barcelona will have no league to play in....

Devolution of some sort seems to be the best compromise for most of these situations. You get some powers and decisions over spending without having to go through all the messy bits.

Interesting times certainly.

Barca will always play in the Champions League because of the money they generate. Whatever the status of Catalonia a way will be found. We're talking football and the only thing that matters is money!

There is already devolution. Catalunya is one of Spain's autonomous communities. The communities have their own governments and presidents and devolved powers.

Today wasn't a vote for independence (yet) though it was a win for the Independence parties in the Catalan elections, where they go from here is difficult because Spain will not recognise their right to choose.

I know, my point is that seems to be the best approach, full independence just seems tricky. Devolution seems to get you most of what you want without some of the possible drawbacks of full independence (in my highly uneducated view anyway!)
