I actually wrote out a long spiel about this scenario then deleted it, as it boils down to this...

If I give the club a photo as a 'thanks for letting me in to photograph' do you think I can attach rules to it's use?

Example...

I go into a club, with permission take photos, sell them for personal profit and so give the club a photo as a thanks. The club then want to use it to potentially send to a paper, other websites that cover the League (professional level), and also the League's own site (even though they have a photo deal with another photographer). I'm not happy about sending stuff out to the papers etc for free, but I have given them that photo, can I give them it but say you're only allowed to use it here, here and here. i.e. Facebook, their own site, their instagram?

I know I retain copyright so obviously I can do what I want but I'm just saying do you think it's reasonable?

tell us the league and level.. different answers different levels

I'd prefer not to be too specific. Why is there a difference though? Just talking about the principle here.

The level is professional, i.e. paid players, spectators pay to attend. The league puts no restrictions in place whatsoever.

I would think it is between the photographer and club to agree these things - I have sometimes given a club/organisation an image or two as a 'thank you' for them allowing me access to 'unusual' places or the use of staff/equipment that would cost me £1000's to hire myself.
But if/when I have done this, there have always been restrictions put on the use of the image - use for club material only, any other use to be paid for at usual rates.

Thanks, good advice. I think I just need to nip this in the bud, and make it clear that the image I give them is for club material/facebook not media/publication use.

I'm not sure why you would willingly give them an image as a gesture of good will then restrict its usage. You say you dont mind them using it for facebook but not media publication yet fb images are widely copied and used by any and everyone. Personally I think your giving in one hand and taking in the other. If you are wanting to create good feelings then just give them it with unrestricted use but maybe place your website/name somewhere on the image and ask for it not to be cropped out. It may/will still get cropped but the gesture has been made by you.

Yea, that's the point I'm making though. It IS give and take, what's wrong with that? The bottom line is that I don't have to give them anything, but I do give them something but make sure that they use it in a way that I'm happy with.

Yea facebook photos can be nicked, I always put my web address on the photo like you say. I take it on the chin that some fans may copy it and have that shot for free. I really hope that a newspaper or reputable website wouldn't take an image off Facebook and publish it without asking permission? Does that happen?

I never give the club my best images from the game, I keep them back for my own sales, I give them a good shot but just general action. Unless they're paying me to cover the game, which they sometimes do.
